Microsoft has introduced Mu, a compact AI language model specifically engineered to function entirely on a PC’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Designed for efficiency and privacy, Mu empowers users to execute natural language tasks on Copilot+ PCs without the need for cloud assistance.

Local Processing for Enhanced Performance

Unlike traditional cloud-based models, Mu processes user prompts locally, facilitating quicker and more secure interactions. Microsoft has streamlined the model to integrate with the Settings agent in Windows Insider builds, allowing users to modify system settings like brightness and power modes through natural language requests.

Efficient Architecture of Mu

Microsoft stated that Mu incorporates only 330 million parameters, yet its capabilities compete with those of significantly larger models. It employs a transformer-based encoder-decoder architecture, which enhances efficiency by separating the input processing from output generation.

Testing conducted on Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU revealed a 47 percent decrease in the time taken to generate the first token, with decoding speeds nearly five times faster than comparable decoder-only models. On optimised devices, such as the Surface Laptop 7, Mu can achieve more than 200 tokens per second in real-time, guaranteeing minimal latency and a seamless user experience.

Privacy as a Priority

In addition to speed, Mu places a strong emphasis on user privacy, conducting all computations locally on the device. This approach ensures that personal information remains securely on the machine, a crucial factor for both individual users and enterprises.

System-Level Command Efficiency

The company highlighted that Mu has been especially fine-tuned to manage thousands of system-level commands. Whether adjusting screen configurations or overseeing power settings, users can operate the system with clear and straightforward commands.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Microsoft’s commitment to upgrading its European cloud infrastructure to enhance data sovereignty, ensuring the protection of customer data within European legal boundaries.
