Starlink Satellite Internet Expansion in India – Key Discussions with Elon Musk
Starlink satellite internet is poised to be a significant topic as Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets with tech billionaire Elon Musk during his upcoming visit to the US. Apart from Starlink, discussions will likely include trade matters and the advancements in Artificial Intelligence, according to various media outlets.
Modi’s Meeting Agenda with Musk
Another focal point of Modi’s meet with Musk, who is in charge of the ‘Department of Government Efficiency’, is anticipated to be Tesla’s entrance into the Indian market, as reported by CNBC based on insights from a government spokesperson.
Trade Talks with President Trump
Modi has already arrived in the US and is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump on Thursday. Trade negotiations along with tariff concessions are expected to feature heavily in their discussions.
Potential One-on-One Dialogue
Following the meeting with Trump, Musk is likely to engage in a direct conversation with Modi. Starlink’s efforts to launch its satellite internet service in India have faced several delays due to regulatory issues and security apprehensions. Presently, the application for entry into India is undergoing governmental scrutiny.
Addressing Security Concerns
Reports from Reuters have indicated that Musk is willing to provide assurances regarding India’s security concerns, particularly involving the local storage of data.
Security Clearance for Starlink
Last year, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that Starlink is in the process of securing the essential clearances, which demands compliance with the government’s requirement to process and keep all data within India, while ensuring encryption and robust security of satellite signals.
Regulatory Approval Expectations
Should Starlink meet the prescribed conditions, expectations are high for it to receive a permit. The entry of Starlink into the Indian market could lead to competition with Mukesh Ambani’s Jio. Moreover, Starlink’s ambitions gained momentum recently when the Indian government announced it would administratively allocate spectrum for satellite broadband, aligning with Musk’s preferences, despite Ambani’s push for an auction system.
Challenges in India
In December, Musk revealed that Starlink’s satellite internet services were inactive in India after authorities confiscated two of the company’s devices—one in a conflict area and the other during a drug trafficking investigation.
Tesla’s Market Approach
Musk has voiced concerns over India’s steep import tariffs on electric vehicles. Despite ongoing discussions about establishing local manufacturing, no concrete plans have emerged so far. While Tesla has not disclosed intentions to build a factory in India, preferring to focus on China, the Indian market presents significant potential for growth in the tech sector. There is also considerable enthusiasm for Tesla cars among Indian automotive fans.
Future Discussions
It remains uncertain whether Tesla’s plans for entering the Indian market will be discussed during the meeting, although enhancing the supply chain for electric vehicle components from India is expected to be a key topic of conversation.
