Motorola Edge 70 Pro Review: Mid-Range Innovator
The Motorola Edge 70 Pro is making a significant impression in the highly competitive mid-range smartphone market, where brands such as OnePlus, Redmi, and Poco dominate. This underrated brand has recently launched the Edge 70 Pro model, alongside the Edge 70 and Edge 70 Fusion series, all designed for the mid-range audience.
Motorola Edge 70 Pro: Design
The Motorola Edge 70 Pro distinctly stands out due to its sleek design and comfortable feel. Over the years, Motorola has maintained a slender profile while experimenting with unique aesthetics and rear-panel textures that give it a premium allure. It is available in three different rear panel finishes: satin-luxe, fabric, and marble textures. The Pantone Tea colour variant adds a touch of sophistication.
Measuring just 6.99mm thick and weighing 190 grams, this smartphone houses a substantial 6500mAh battery. Its polycarbonate frame feels robust and secure without any slipperiness. With MIL-STD-810H certification and IP68 and IP69 ratings, it offers exceptional dust and water resistance. However, it is worth noting that Motorola has opted not to include a phone case in the box this year, which may disappoint customers looking to upgrade.
Although the device is durable, purchasing a case might still be advisable due to the raised camera deco. Overall, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro combines aesthetics and affordability seamlessly.
Motorola Edge 70 Pro: Display
The Edge 70 Pro showcases a 6.8-inch ‘Extreme’ AMOLED display featuring a 1.5K resolution, a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, HDR10+ support, and peak brightness of 5,200 nits. Users will enjoy crisp, vibrant visuals, supported by Pantone validation for colour accuracy. The display’s narrow bezels further enhance the visual experience. While the specifications claim a 144Hz refresh rate, daily usage typically sees it operate at 120Hz, with games like BGMI engaging at refresh rates of 120Hz and 90Hz respectively. The display remains smooth and responsive, meeting user expectations.
Moreover, screen brightness is commendable, allowing for clear visibility even under direct sunlight, which contributes to overall usability.
Motorola Edge 70 Pro: Camera
The camera setup on the Motorola Edge 70 Pro includes a dual-camera arrangement featuring a 50MP main camera equipped with Sony LYT710, a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 3-in-1 light sensor. While the telephoto camera was removed this year, daylight performance is satisfactory, providing detailed images. However, photos tend to appear oversaturated after processing, resulting in high contrast rather than natural-looking images, although they remain suitable for social media.
In portrait mode, while the overall image quality is decent, colours can seem artificial, even though the background blur and edge detection appear natural. Low-light photography shows promise, with images that maintain clarity and accurate colours, though they may not appeal to those preferring a more natural colour palette over contrast.
Motorola Edge 70 Pro: Performance
The performance of the Motorola Edge 70 Pro is anchored by the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Extreme processor, paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.1 storage. In practical usage scenarios, the smartphone excels in handling everyday tasks, multitasking, and gaming without any noticeable issues. Nevertheless, thermal management could be better.
Under heavy usage conditions, such as extended gaming sessions, the device may heat quickly, impacting performance. However, for casual gaming and general daily tasks, including streaming and browsing, it remains reliable and fluid.
Motorola Edge 70 Pro: Battery
With a powerful 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro offers impressive longevity, comfortably lasting a full day under regular usage. Users can expect around eight hours of screen time even during heavy activities, such as gaming, multitasking, and social media. It also supports a 90W TurboPower fast charger, fully charging the device in about an hour.
Motorola Edge 70 Pro Verdict
The Motorola Edge 70 Pro succeeds in numerous aspects, including its attractive design, impressive 144Hz display, satisfactory daily performance, and long-lasting battery life. Nevertheless, it falls short in some areas, particularly concerning camera consistency and thermal management during demanding tasks.
Despite its minor drawbacks, the Motorola Edge 70 Pro remains a solid choice for users who appreciate sophistication and seamless performance. While it may not present many surprises, it does strike the right balance for those seeking a premium mid-range experience. However, at a price of Rs 38,999, alternative options from brands like Oppo, OnePlus, or Redmi may be worth exploring for power-intensive usage.
