On April 8, the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, revealed that Codex, the AI software agent developed for cloud-based software engineering, has surpassed 3 million weekly users. To mark this achievement, the company has decided to reset its user limits, providing developers with enhanced access to the platform. Altman also indicated that this reset will occur for every additional million users until the platform reaches 10 million.
In an X post, Altman stated, “To celebrate 3 million weekly Codex users, we are resetting usage limits. We will do this for every million users up to 10 million. Happy building!”

Understanding the Codex Limit Reset
The Codex limit reset will effectively eliminate users’ previous usage data, meaning that even if they have utilised part of their limit, they will be able to restart at zero for the remaining time period. This allows users to receive a new quota for utilising the AI tool for the rest of the duration, regardless of any prior consumption.
Additionally, OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of older AI models within Codex. Starting from April 14, users will have access to GPT 5.2-codex, GPT 5.1 codex mini, GPT 5.1 codex Max, GPT 5.1 codex, GPT 5.1, and GPT 5 as available options.
This announcement arrives as Anthropic has introduced its next-generation AI model, Claude Mythos, in a preview stage for Project Glasswing. Initially, this model was expected to function as a coding tool, likely the next iteration of the Claude code. However, the preview has now been directed towards cybersecurity applications.
Growth of the Codex User Base
Thibault Sottiaux, the head of Codex, also shared an X post acknowledging the rising user base of Codex tools.
“Three million users are now engaging with Codex weekly, up from two million just under a month ago. It’s remarkable to witness this growth. Thank you to everyone involved and to the broader ecosystem we contribute to. To commemorate this, we are resetting rate limits to allow continued building, and we will reset them…”

Sottiaux noted that three million users are now active weekly on Codex, illustrating a remarkable increase from two million in just under a month. He expressed gratitude towards the community and ecosystem surrounding the platform.
