OpenAI Launches Learning Accelerator to Transform Education in India
OpenAI has unveiled the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing the role of AI in education within India by empowering educators, students, and educational institutions. This programme was introduced in the lead-up to the forthcoming India AI Action Summit 2026.
India boasts the largest student demographic engaging with ChatGPT worldwide, with millions depending on it for homework assistance, exam revision, and creative ideation. The Accelerator aims to ensure that AI serves to augment the learning experience instead of providing shortcuts, while also equipping teachers with advanced innovative resources.
Collaborative Efforts and Partnerships
Central to this initiative are strategic partnerships with prominent institutions such as IIT Madras, AICTE, the Ministry of Education, and ARISE schools, aiming to enhance four key areas: promoting research, broadening AI accessibility, delivering impactful training, and integrating novel learning tools.
Investment and Resources
As part of this collaboration, OpenAI has committed funding of $500,000 to IIT Madras for ongoing research to explore how AI can enhance educational outcomes and teaching methodologies, drawing insights from cognitive neuroscience. In the upcoming six months, OpenAI will distribute approximately 500,000 ChatGPT licences to educators and students via its collaborators, along with training sessions to build AI literacy.
Leah Belsky, the Vice President of Education at OpenAI, remarks that AI possesses exceptional potential to empower both educators and learners. She emphasises the importance of partnerships with educational professionals and institutions to fully realise this potential. According to her, this initiative is vital to OpenAI’s mission of ensuring that AGI serves humanity, marking one of OpenAI’s most significant investments in the education ecosystem in India.
Introducing ChatGPT Study Mode
Additionally, the initiative launches ChatGPT Study Mode, designed to act as a personalised tutor that assists students step-by-step through interactive questioning and structured responses.
Leadership and Future Vision
To strengthen its footprint in the region, OpenAI has appointed Raghav Gupta as Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. With two decades of experience linking education and technology, Gupta aims to collaborate closely with universities, educational institutions, government entities, and educators to substantially transform education via AI, thus supporting India’s aspirations to lead in AI-driven education.
This announcement highlights OpenAI’s escalating interest in India, which includes plans to establish its first office in New Delhi later this year, a ChatGPT Go subscription priced at ₹399, and enhanced support for Indic languages in its upcoming GPT-5 model.
