Perplexity Introduces Deep Research AI: Outpacing ChatGPT and Gemini in Efficiency

Deep Research by Perplexity AI: Unveiling Comprehensive Research Reports

Deep Research by Perplexity AI is a newly launched feature that aims to provide detailed research reports through efficient analysis within minutes. This innovative tool was announced on Friday and seeks to deliver expert insights across various domains such as finance, marketing, and product research.

The Launch of Deep Research

The introduction of Deep Research aligns with recent advancements from leading AI companies. For instance, Google released a similar feature for its Gemini AI platform in December 2024, followed by OpenAI’s release of their equivalent tool earlier this month. Notably, all three organisations have chosen to label their functionalities as “Deep Research.”

How Deep Research Operates

Perplexity’s Deep Research mode conducts thorough searches, reviews a multitude of sources, and synthesises information into organised reports. This tool is touted to be capable of producing results in mere minutes, contrasting with the hours typically required for manual research. Users can easily access this feature on the Perplexity website by selecting “Deep Research” from the mode selector prior to entering a query.

Performance Comparison with Other AI Tools

According to Perplexity, Deep Research has shown impressive results in Humanity’s Last Exam, a benchmarking test designed to assess AI models against expert-level queries. The tool achieved a score of 21.1%, outperforming competitors including Google’s Gemini Thinking with 6.2%, Grok-2 at 3.8%, and OpenAI’s GPT-4o at 3.3%. However, OpenAI’s own Deep Research tool surpassed this with a score of 26.6%.

Pricing and Accessibility

While OpenAI’s Deep Research feature currently necessitates a Pro subscription priced at £200 monthly, Perplexity has chosen a more user-friendly pricing structure. The tool is accessible for free, with non-subscribers limited to five queries per day while Pro users enjoy access to up to 500 queries daily. Furthermore, Perplexity’s Deep Research is reportedly much quicker, achieving most tasks in under three minutes, in contrast to OpenAI’s 5 to 30 minutes.

Perplexity’s Competitive Edge

Users can explore the new Deep Research tool on the web, with plans for rollout on iOS, Android, and Mac devices forthcoming.
