Android Auto Upgrades: New Features and Improvements

On May 12, Android Auto revealed significant improvements by introducing support for video applications and innovative Gemini-powered functionalities. At the Android Show, it was announced that the Auto OS will deliver an enhanced experience with premium entertainment and a more intuitive Gemini across select vehicles.

In addition to these new capabilities, the Android Auto interface has been redesigned with Material 3 Expressive elements, showcasing more dynamic typography, smoother transitions, and stylish wallpapers for a contemporary aesthetic. New Entertainment Features

Android Auto has launched support for video applications, enabling users to enjoy videos on platforms like YouTube. This feature will provide 60fps full HD video quality and is set to be available later this year.

Videos can only be viewed on Android Auto when the vehicle is parked. As soon as the car transitions from “park” to “drive,” the video will automatically change to “audio-only” mode.

The tech giant has emphasized that this feature will be accessible in vehicles from manufacturers such as BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.

Integration with Media Apps

In addition to video support, Android Auto will also facilitate media applications like Spotify and YouTube Music. It promises an immersive experience with spatial audio via Dolby Atmos.

Gemini Intelligence

Later this year, Android Auto will incorporate Gemini Intelligence, which understands user context and automates tasks for convenience. Google introduced Magic Cue, a feature that allows users to instantly send addresses from message notifications, while Gemini voice controls will enable actions such as ordering food from delivery services.

Google Maps Enhancements

With the improvements made to Android Auto, Google Maps will showcase the Immersive Navigation feature, featuring an edge-to-edge map display that offers an elegant look and increased viewing space. Additionally, vehicles equipped with “Google built-in” will benefit from live lane guidance, providing accurate, real-time lane-by-lane navigation. This function utilises the car’s front-facing camera to assess road conditions and assist drivers in maintaining the correct lane while navigating.
