Roblox’s Age Verification Initiative: Enhancing Child Safety in India’s Gaming Landscape

Roblox Age Verification for Enhanced Online Safety in India

Roblox, a leading platform in the gaming industry, has implemented mandatory age verification in India, requiring all users, including children, teens, and adults, to confirm their age before accessing communication features.

Starting January 14, players in India will need to complete age verification to use chat and related communication tools on Roblox. The company states it stands out as the first major gaming platform to enforce age verification across all user demographics.

Global Implementation Now Encompasses India

Initially, Roblox began a phased rollout of its age verification system in November 2025, first launching in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The company reports that over half of its global active user base has already completed the verification process.

The platform is now extending this technology worldwide, including India, as part of its efforts to bolster online protections and child safety.

Understanding Roblox’s Age Verification Process

Roblox has made age verification essential for all chat functionalities. The process combines facial age estimation with ID verification to assess a user’s age accurately. If a user is found to be underage, their access to specific communication features will be limited.

The platform categorizes users into six age groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+.

During the age verification, users must provide either a video selfie or a photo captured with their device’s camera. The system employs third-party AI technology from Persona to estimate the user’s age and classify them into the appropriate group.

Realizing that facial analysis may not always accurately determine age, users aged 13 and above can choose to verify their identity with a government-issued ID, such as a passport or driving licence, for a more accurate age confirmation. Facial age estimation primarily serves those users without access to governmental identity documentation.

The Importance of Age Verification

Roblox emphasizes that this initiative aims to establish a new standard for online safety.

According to Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, the new system intends to set a “new gold standard” for user interactions on the platform. This mandate is designed to ensure users communicate exclusively with those within their respective age groups and to prevent adults from engaging with minors.

By implementing age verification, Roblox gains better oversight over enabling or restricting features based on a user’s age. The company also pointed out that chat functionality is turned off by default for users under the age of nine.
