Galaxy Z TriFold: Samsung’s Innovative Tri-Fold Smartphone
Galaxy Z TriFold marks the debut of Samsung’s pioneering tri-fold smartphone, showcasing the company’s boldest foldable innovation to date. Following extensive leaks, teasers, and preliminary engineering displays, the device is set for an official launch next week in South Korea, with plans for broader availability imminent.
Design and Display Features of Galaxy Z TriFold
The Galaxy Z TriFold builds on Samsung’s impressive legacy with sixteen foldable devices, offering the largest display ever featured on a Galaxy foldable model. Its design incorporates dual titanium hinges and an array of multitasking capabilities tailored to its extensive screen.
Innovative Hinge Technology
The dual titanium hinge system allows both sides of the main display to fold inwards, ensuring complete protection of the screen when closed. Distinct from Huawei’s Mate XT series, Samsung has positioned the cover screen on the back, maintaining the inner display’s safety at all times.
Main Screen Specifications
When fully opened, the primary display measures 10 inches diagonally, boasting a resolution of 2,160 x 1,584 pixels, an adaptive refresh rate ranging from 1-120Hz, and peak brightness reaching up to 1,600 nits. It includes a minor punch-hole for the 10MP selfie camera and comes with an included protective film.
Cover Display Characteristics
The secondary cover display is 6.5 inches, offering a resolution of 2,520 x 1,080, along with an adaptive refresh rate of 1-120Hz. This display features Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 and another 10MP selfie camera. The 21:9 aspect ratio allows the folded device to maintain a standard smartphone shape.
Software and Multitasking Capabilities
The Galaxy Z TriFold operates on OneUI 8, built upon Android 16, and introduces enhanced multitasking features. Users can run up to three full-sized applications simultaneously in portrait mode, while the expansive canvas permits a more tablet-like experience. The device also stands as Samsung’s first to support standalone Samsung DeX, enabling a desktop interface from Quick Settings when connected to a keyboard and mouse.
Hardware and Build Quality
Despite its three-panel structure, Samsung maintains a remarkably slim profile. The device utilises an Advanced Armor Aluminum frame and features a thickness of just 3.9mm at its thinnest point. Weighing in at 309 grams, it folds down to measurements of 159.2 x 75 x 12.9mm, and is rated IP48 for dust and water resistance.
Specifications and Performance
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z TriFold is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, paired with 16GB of RAM and storage options of either 512GB or 1TB. Its rear camera system mirrors that of the Galaxy Z Fold7, featuring a 200MP main sensor (ISOCELL HP2), a 10MP 3x telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultrawide camera.
Battery and Charging Options
The device is equipped with a 5,600mAh three-cell battery distributed across the three rear panels. Charging speeds include 45W wired and 15W wireless options.
Availability of Galaxy Z TriFold
Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z TriFold in a sole Crafted Black variant. While pricing details are still to be revealed, South Korean customers will be the first to acquire the device starting Friday, 12 December. Samsung has also announced plans for future availability in regions such as China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UAE, and the United States.
