OnePlus Introduces Smart Button, Phasing Out Iconic Alert Slider

OnePlus has made the decision to phase out its renowned Alert Slider in future smartphone models, opting for an innovative smart button instead. This announcement was made by Pete Lau, the founder of OnePlus, in an extensive post on the OnePlus Community forum.

Changes in the OnePlus Device Design

The Alert Slider, a distinctive feature of OnePlus smartphones since the company’s inception, enabled users to effortlessly switch sound profiles without the need to unlock their devices. Lau characterised it as a hallmark of “thoughtful design,” yet he recognised that its utility was constrained by its hardware-centric nature.

Reevaluating the Alert Slider

Lau indicated that the choice to retire the Alert Slider was made after careful consideration. “When the OnePlus 10T was released without the Alert Slider, we listened. Loud and clear,” he mentioned. In response to this feedback, OnePlus dedicated the last three years to exploring ways to enhance the functionality of this feature.

The primary concern, as outlined by Lau, was the Alert Slider’s limited customisability. “Its function is fixed to its physical position, making it impossible to reprogram or expand without sacrificing its simplicity,” he noted. This limitation led OnePlus to seek a more flexible alternative.

Smart Button Replacement

The new smart button will serve as a substitute for the Alert Slider, crafted to provide greater customisation and improved functionality. Lau expressed that it is “a button that adapts to you,” capable of executing a range of tasks tailored to individual user preferences.

Although specific features of the smart button have yet to be disclosed, Lau reassured users that key functions, such as quickly switching sound profiles, will still be preserved. “This was non-negotiable,” he confirmed.

Additionally, the introduction of the smart button will allow OnePlus to maximise internal space within the device, resulting in structural enhancements and overall better performance.

Balancing Innovation with Heritage

Lau recognised that the Alert Slider carries significant nostalgic value for a large segment of OnePlus users. “This is indeed a substantial change. And it can be challenging to accept,” he conveyed. Nevertheless, he is optimistic that the smart button will facilitate a more personalised and forward-thinking user experience.

“We’re not merely replacing the Alert Slider, we’re evolving it,” Lau stated. “Retaining the best elements while unveiling new possibilities that were previously unattainable.”

OnePlus is seeking input from its user community to help determine the final capabilities of the smart button, highlighting its enduring commitment to community-led design.
