Safari Import: Simplified Browser Switching with Chrome
Switching between web browsers can often be cumbersome, especially when using mobile devices. Google is currently trialling a new solution in Chrome 145 Beta that facilitates a smooth transfer of data from Safari to Chrome while complying with Apple’s stringent security measures.
Introducing the “Safari Import” Feature
Google is developing a novel “Safari import” feature for iOS, designed to streamline the browser-switching experience, as reported by The MacObserver. This functionality is presently in beta and is set to assist users with manually importing and exporting bookmarks, browsing history, and passwords from Safari to Chrome using a single ZIP file.
Understanding the Process
The method will depend on a tool that utilises a secure file-export technique. Chrome will provide users with detailed, step-by-step guidance on creating the ZIP file through Safari/iOS’s export features. Once the ZIP file is produced, Chrome will be able to use it for importing bookmarks, history, and passwords. However, to initiate the download of these files, identity verification through Face ID, Touch ID, or a Passcode will be required.
Current Availability and Future Impact
This feature is now part of the latest Chrome beta for iOS, so it may take a few weeks before users see it in the stable public version. If successfully implemented, this feature will grant users the flexibility to transition from Safari with ease, ensuring that browsing data is not lost in the process. Users will need to save the ZIP file in their local Downloads folder. Next, within Chrome’s settings, they will select the “Safari Import” option and choose the saved ZIP file. Ultimately, Chrome will synchronise all this information with the user’s Google Account.
Enhancing Cross-Platform Syncing
This update will enhance Chrome’s position as a more effective choice for cross-platform syncing across iPhone, Windows, and Android devices.
