A Singapore-based designer has created a remarkable piece of wearable technology, integrating a fully functional Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) into a pair of Nike trainers. This extraordinary creation, known as the Air SNES, was developed by Gustavo Bonzanini to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the SNES.
Bonzanini chose the iconic Nike Air Max 90 model as the foundation for his design, converting the classic silhouette into a portable gaming device. True to the console’s heritage, the trainers feature the distinctive grey and purple colour scheme instantly familiar to fans of the ’90s gaming era. This project goes beyond a simple cosmetic overhaul; the sneakers are entirely functional for gaming.
The engineering accomplishment was achieved through emulation rather than the use of physical game cartridges. Bonzanini cleverly integrated a compact Raspberry Pi Zero W computer, equipped with the RetroPie emulator, within the shoe’s tongue. This ingenious setup enables the trainers to play classic SNES games.
For genuine gameplay experience, the design incorporates smart connectivity options. A small analogue converter provides video output, allowing connection to a television using RCA cables, which maintains an authentic 90s vibe. While the system can operate with an original SNES controller, the designer modified it using an 8BitDo kit to support wireless Bluetooth functionality. Power is supplied by a compact battery pack, offering around 30 minutes of gaming on the move.
The Air SNES truly exemplifies retro gaming nostalgia paired with innovative design. Bonzanini has confirmed that these custom trainers are a unique, non-commercial creation, meaning they will not be available for public sale.
