Snowflake’s Expansion Plans in India and AI’s Impact on the Workforce
Snowflake, under the leadership of Managing Director for India, Vijayant Rai, has made substantial headway in the Indian market over the last five years. As an AI data cloud company, it collaborates with major enterprises and digital innovators such as IndiGo, Razorpay, Swiggy, Shiprocket, and Bajaj Allianz, aiming to enhance large-scale data and AI integration.
Rai announced plans for Snowflake to increase its workforce in India to more than 700 employees by 2025, and to strengthen relationships with partners including Deloitte, EY, TCS, LTIMindtree, AWS, and Microsoft. In partnership with NASSCOM, Snowflake aims to train 100,000 students and professionals in AI and data over the next two years. Rai positioned India as a crucial component in Snowflake’s global growth strategy, predicting that AI could contribute an impressive $1 trillion to the economy by 2035, placing Indian developers at the forefront of global AI advancements.
Key Milestones for Snowflake in India
According to Rai, Snowflake has effectively established a commanding presence in the Indian arena over the past five years. The company has broadened its footprint by expanding teams across various functions, launching new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and continuing the growth of its Pune Center of Excellence, the sole facility of its kind in the APJ region. Snowflake’s AI Data Cloud currently empowers various sectors, including BFSI, SMEs, manufacturing, logistics, retail, and digital natives, allowing them to collaborate on data and develop applications while driving innovation by eliminating data silos and facilitating simpler architectures. This platform has gained traction with clients such as IndiGo, Dezerv, Deepak Fertilisers, Bajaj Allianz General Insurance, Razorpay, Shiprocket, and Godrej Capital. Additionally, 50% of Snowflake’s APJ partner ecosystem is anchored in India.
Customer Collaborations
Snowflake works with a diverse mix of customers ranging from digital natives and SMEs to large enterprises in India. The potential for data and AI is enormous, especially as the country continues its growth trajectory. For example, Swiggy, one of the company’s earliest clients, serves millions daily and relies on Snowflake for its modern data platform. This collaboration enables them to handle vast data volumes for real-time business monitoring and analytics effectively.
Another notable case is Grow Indigo, where AI is creating significant enhancements at the grassroots level. Prior to using Snowflake, their business intelligence reporting required almost 100 hours each month, with limited real-time analytics capabilities. Currently, they have minimized report generation time to almost instantaneous, aiming to cut farmer enrollment time by 30%. They’ve centralised their data to obtain real-time insights, removed expensive data duplications, and implemented AI-driven document processing and queries on a scalable platform, facilitating their carbon programme expansion.
Shiprocket is using the Snowflake AI Data Cloud platform to support over 150,000 MSME merchants, helping them to enhance their data infrastructure.
AI’s Role in Job Creation
When discussing concerns around AI leading to job losses, Rai believes that AI will complement rather than replace work. He anticipates that over the next five years, AI will elevate the value of data professionals. With advancements in agentic AI, tasks such as data cleaning and feature engineering will increasingly be automated. This shift will allow data scientists and analysts to engage in more valuable work, focusing on strategic business questions and innovative solutions. Snowflake is dedicated to empowering individuals to tackle higher-level problems, thus amplifying their significance in the workforce.
To facilitate this transition, the company has also announced a partnership with NASSCOM FutureSkills Prime to provide six free learning programmes aimed at transforming India into a leading Digital Talent Nation. This initiative aspires to train 100,000 professionals and students in foundational data and AI skills over the next two years.
India’s Impact on Snowflake’s Global Growth Strategy
Rai highlights the Indian market as vast and diverse, serving as a pivotal growth driver for Snowflake’s global strategy. The potential for data expansion in India is significant. Within the framework of India’s “Viksit Bharat @ 2047” vision, technology and AI are crucial for the country’s ambition to evolve into a $23–$35 trillion economy. With an expected demand for one million AI professionals by 2026 and AI’s potential to contribute $1 trillion to the economy by 2035, Snowflake’s strategy aims to foster this growth.
Snowflake is poised to capitalise on opportunities spanning both the commercial sector for digital natives and SMEs, as well as the enterprise segment targeting large organisations. Over the past five years, the company has significantly enhanced its partner ecosystem, collaborating with leading advisory firms, system integrators, and global innovation service providers to ensure comprehensive national coverage.
Furthermore, AI is transforming global industries, and for India to lead this evolution, the youth must spearhead this AI revolution, prioritising data literacy, ongoing learning, and innovation—key factors for success in an AI and data-driven landscape. Snowflake is committed to enhancing skilling initiatives in India to benefit the global community, firmly believing that Indian developers are at the forefront of global AI innovations.
Investments in Talent, Technology, and Partnerships
Snowflake has made noteworthy investments in India concerning talent, technology, partnerships, and skilling, as this market is integral to its global strategy. The potential for growth is immense, especially as Indian companies employ data and AI for digital transformation. Snowflake’s aim is to bring AI directly into the data domain.
The company plans to continue expanding its workforce, targeting over 700 employees by the conclusion of 2025, focusing on sales, operations, solutions engineering, marketing, and its Pune Center of Excellence. Recognising that its success relies heavily on the prosperity of its partner ecosystem, Snowflake collaborates with advisory leaders including Deloitte and EY, global system integrators such as LTIMindtree and TCS, regional players like Quantiphi and Hoonartek, in addition to hyperscalers AWS and Microsoft. These alliances are centred around acquiring new clients, boosting platform consumption, and unlocking innovative value.
The journey in India is still relatively nascent, but it is developing rapidly, and there are expectations for this momentum to persist for many more years ahead.
