In a recent interview with Startup Superb, Sara Lincoln, Principal Product Manager at Sonos, and Rennie Addabbo, General Manager of Sonos APAC, discussed how consumer feedback, certification challenges, and tailored installation options are influencing the company’s approach in India. They also highlighted the innovative features of Sonos’s latest products: the Arc Ultra soundbar and Sub 4 subwoofer, which enhance the home theatre experience.

Innovative Features of the Arc Ultra

The Arc Ultra incorporates new Sound Motion Technology, which provides double the bass output compared to the standard Arc at 50 Hz, all while maintaining a compact design, as explained by Lincoln. By adding extra transducers, Sonos has improved the ‘sweet spot’, delivering immersive sound that fills the room both horizontally and vertically. “We’ve combined mechanical improvements like custom waveguides and lightweight transducers with software-driven Speech Enhancement to ensure that dialogue is clear, even at elevated volumes,” she stated.

Sub 4: Incremental Improvements

In the realm of bass performance, the Sub 4 wireless subwoofer retains Sonos’s renowned design while ensuring the deep, well-defined bass essential for an outstanding cinematic experience. Lincoln highlighted, “We chose not to drastically change the design because our industrial design philosophy is timeless. Instead, we’ve optimised the internal components to align with customers’ expectations for rich bass.” Its compact size makes it suitable for modern homes without compromising on performance.

A Strong Demand for Premium Home Theatre Solutions

“We see sales of the Arc at two and a half times the rate of the Beam,” disclosed Addabbo, pointing out that Indian consumers are keen to invest in high-end home theatre systems. “This trend validates that we are introducing the right products, as there is a strong market fit in India.” He mentioned that while the Beam is well-liked, the superior capabilities of the Arc series have attracted a particularly enthusiastic audience within the country’s expanding premium market.

Certification Challenges: A Key Hurdle

Local regulatory approvals serve as the primary element affecting launch timelines. “Our objective in India is to launch every Sonos product as swiftly as global availability allows,” Addabbo explained. “The only roadblock between these global schedules and our launches locally is the certification process — involving BIS regulations and paperwork.” He noted that Sonos is actively collaborating with authorities to minimise these delays, aiming for future simultaneous product launches.

Incorporating Indian Insights into Product Development

In a bid to integrate regional nuances, Sonos has opened its global beta-testing programme to Indian users, ensuring that feedback influences software updates and feature introductions. “There is an efficient communication line between our teams in India and our global engineers,” noted Addabbo. “The insights gained here will contribute to future innovations, both locally and internationally.” Lincoln highlighted the importance of user testing: “We observe individuals who are unfamiliar with Sonos using the app, gathering their feedback to continually enhance the experience.”

Tailored Installations for Affluent Customers

Over 55% of Sonos’s revenue in India derives from its custom-installation channel, as Addabbo shared. “Independent audio specialists create complete smart-home and entertainment solutions, often implementing 5.1 systems in every bedroom,” he added. This tailored installation caters to wealthy homeowners looking for integrated, multi-room audio systems, with partners providing essential post-installation support—a valued service among Indian consumers.

Future Aspirations

While the idea of launching products in India first is a long-term ambition, Sonos understands the increasing significance of the market. “If we can collaborate with local authorities to expedite certification, then simultaneous global releases will be a goal,” remarked Addabbo. With software at the core of its operations and continuous feedback from India’s market, Sonos is strategically positioning itself to meet the rising demand for premium, artist-sanctioned audio experiences in the country.
