Starlink Launches Satellite Internet Service in Bangladesh
Starlink has officially introduced its eagerly awaited satellite internet service in Bangladesh, featuring unlimited data plans with speeds reaching up to 300 Mbps. This service is designed to close the digital gap, especially in regions where reliable fibre connections are not available, by offering quick and stable internet through satellite.
Packages Offered by Starlink
Customers can select from the “Starlink Residential” package, which is priced at Tk 6,000 per month (approximately INR 4,500), or the more budget-friendly “Residential Lite” plan available for Tk 4,200 (approximately INR 3,150). Both packages necessitate a one-time installation fee of Tk 47,000 (approximately INR 35,000).
Quick Implementation of Starlink in Bangladesh
This launch occurs merely 90 days after Starlink obtained its licence from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on 29 April. Officials note that this is the swiftest approval for a Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) satellite internet licence in the history of the nation.
Tariff Adjustments for Greater Affordability
The initially proposed monthly rate of Tk 7,000 (approximately INR 5,250) has been revised to offer more competitive pricing following negotiations that aimed at enhancing affordability. Each Starlink terminal is capable of covering a radius of 20–30 metres, making it adequate for connectivity in up to three rooms within a multi-storey structure.
Government Initiatives for Enhanced Accessibility
The government is also devising a financial strategy to improve Starlink’s availability for organisations providing essential citizen services. This could potentially involve microcredit options, as well as support from financial institutions and banks.
