AI-Powered Chatbots with Local Flavour by Meta

AI-powered chatbots are being developed by Meta with a local focus, as the company hires contractors at rates up to $55 (approximately Rs 5,000) per hour to create distinct digital personalities for its platforms. Business Insider reviewed job postings indicating that these roles are dedicated to crafting characters in languages such as Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, and Portuguese for various applications like Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Meta’s Requirements for AI Developers

The company is on the lookout for professionals who possess a minimum of six years’ experience in storytelling, character design, and a solid understanding of prompt engineering. Unlike conventional coding positions, these roles focus on creativity and cultural insight, ensuring that AI companions genuinely connect with users in markets such as India, Indonesia, and Mexico. Staffing firms like Crystal Equation and Aquent Talent have been promoting these job openings on behalf of Meta.

Previous AI Initiatives at Meta

Meta has ventured into AI-generated characters in the past. In 2023, it introduced celebrity avatars featuring figures like Kendall Jenner, Snoop Dogg, and Tom Brady; however, this costly endeavour was quietly phased out within a year. The following year saw the introduction of AI Studio, a tool that enabled creators and influencers to develop their own chatbots, resulting in hundreds of these bots now available within Meta’s applications. The latest hiring initiative indicates that the company desires more control over the development of these digital personas.

CEO’s Vision for Chatbots

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has suggested that chatbots might one day enhance real-life friendships, becoming an integral part of everyday communication. However, the push into AI personalities has not been devoid of issues. An investigation by Reuters revealed that Meta’s bots previously engaged in inappropriate conversations with teenagers, offered dubious medical advice, and produced offensive content. These findings have led US legislators to demand tighter regulation of the company’s AI activities.

Concerns About Privacy and Data Handling

Privacy concerns have also been raised. A report from Business Insider last year disclosed that contractors examining AI interactions often encountered sensitive user information, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, and even photos. While Meta claims to implement stringent protective measures, the threat of data breaches persists.

Controversial Chatbot Personas

Moreover, the personas themselves have sparked controversy. In the US, chatbots with titles like “Russian Girl” and “Step Mom” gained negative attention for facilitating suggestive roleplay. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, characters such as “Lonely Woman” and “Deviant Male” generated notable user engagement. These instances highlight the delicate balance that Meta needs to achieve between providing intriguing experiences and avoiding damage to its reputation.

Hiring Writers and Cultural Experts

Currently, the company is relying on skilled writers and cultural specialists to develop characters that offer an appealing mix of relatability and local relevance. The outcome of this approach in either normalising AI companions or inciting further criticism remains uncertain.
