WhatsApp Voicemail Feature: Leave Voice Messages After Missed Calls

WhatsApp is introducing a voicemail feature that allows users to leave voice messages if a call isn’t answered. This functionality, identified in the recent Android beta by WABetaInfo, is currently available only to a limited group of testers.

New Voice Message Option for Unanswered Calls

The feature introduces a “Record voice message” button on the call screen when the recipient fails to answer. Alongside options to “Call again” or “Cancel,” this quick access allows callers to record and send a voice message without navigating back to the chat window.

How It Differs from Standard Voice Notes

Unlike traditional voice notes that can be sent at any time, this feature is specifically activated after a missed call. The voice message is sent directly into the chat thread paired with the missed call notification, making it more noticeable for recipients who can respond at their convenience.

Purpose of the Voicemail Feature

This tool aims to simplify follow-ups, particularly when urgent information needs to be communicated yet the other person is unavailable.

Availability and Future Rollout

At present, the voicemail feature is confined to the Android beta version and has not yet been seen in WhatsApp’s iOS TestFlight programme. As with many experiments reported by WABetaInfo, there is no scheduled timeline for a broader rollout.

Additional Features Being Tested

This innovation arrives shortly after WhatsApp was observed testing a reminders function designed to assist users in returning calls they missed. With these enhancements, WhatsApp seems to be focusing on improving its calling experience, even as an increasing number of users favour text-based communication.
