Business AI: WhatsApp Launch for Indian Enterprises

Business AI was unveiled by WhatsApp on May 7, specifically for enterprises in India, introducing artificial intelligence-driven customer support directly within the WhatsApp Business app. This initiative is designed to assist small enterprises in automating customer interactions, enhancing sales conversions, and managing substantial query volumes without the need for external tools.

Features of Business AI

This tool, available in all native Indian languages, enables qualifying businesses to engage with customer inquiries around the clock, capture potential leads, arrange appointments, and recommend products right inside WhatsApp chats. Meta has mentioned that the AI assistant can also be tailored using a business’s specific catalogues, documents, and profile information to provide answers regarding products, pricing, discounts, shipping, and other customer support questions.

Payment Integration Through UPI

Additionally, Meta announced that Business AI will soon enable UPI-based payments directly within the WhatsApp chat environment.

Supporting Small Enterprises

Ravi Garg, Director of Business Messaging at Meta India, stated that small enterprises play an essential role in India’s economy, and they fully recognise the significance of each customer interaction for these businesses.

He added that over time, many have expressed that managing a high volume of customer inquiries with limited personnel remains one of their greatest challenges. This is where AI is expected to be transformative for them.

According to Garg, with the launch of Business AI on WhatsApp, the goal is to empower small enterprises by ensuring they do not miss customer inquiries after hours or find it difficult to keep up during busy periods.

Growth of Conversational Commerce in India

This launch coincides with the rapid growth of conversational commerce in India. A study from Kantar, mentioned by Meta, reveals that 91% of online adults in India engage in conversations with businesses on a weekly basis, highlighting messaging platforms as a primary means for customer interaction.

Automated Conversations and Control for Business Owners

Meta explained that the AI assistant is capable of handling routine conversations autonomously, while business owners maintain complete control and can intervene whenever needed for queries that require personal attention.

Eligible enterprises can access this feature through the “Your Business AI” option found in the Tools section of the WhatsApp Business app. Meta noted that the rollout will gradually become available to all qualified businesses in the upcoming weeks.
