WhatsApp Introduces Writing Help with Artificial Intelligence
WhatsApp has launched an innovative artificial intelligence feature aimed at enhancing the way users compose messages. This tool, known as Writing Help, enables individuals to rephrase, proofread, or modify the tone of their conversations, as announced by the Meta-owned company on Wednesday.
Powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, this feature ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access users’ original messages or the suggested alternatives. The company stated that this guarantees message privacy on the platform, even when users utilize the new functionality.
Creating Alternative Styles with Writing Help
With Writing Help, users have the ability to generate rewrites in various styles, including professional, humorous, supportive, or simply rephrased versions.
Examples of Creative Rewrites
To showcase the tool, WhatsApp provided an example where the initial message read: “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.” The AI proposed amusing alternatives such as “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard,” “Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them,” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”
WhatsApp’s Strategy to Retain Users
This rollout underscores WhatsApp’s strategy to keep users engaged within its own app ecosystem, rather than turning to external AI tools such as ChatGPT for writing support.
Mixed Reactions to the New Feature
However, not everyone is expected to welcome this feature. Some critics suggest that while AI may be beneficial for composing emails or work-related messages, numerous users still appreciate the authenticity of personal dialogues with family and friends.
According to WhatsApp, users can access the new functionality through a pencil icon while crafting a message. Writing Help is set to initially launch in English across selected countries, starting this week.
