Windows 11 Introduces Video Wallpaper Support

Windows 11 is set to include video wallpaper support, reviving a feature reminiscent of the Windows Vista era. Recently, this capability was identified in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview builds by user @phantomofearth on X, although Microsoft has not yet formally announced it.

Video Wallpaper Features

This functionality enables users to utilise video files, including formats such as MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, and MKV, as their desktop backgrounds, similar to how they would choose a static image. Once activated, the video will continuously play whenever the desktop is visible.

A Look Back at DreamScene

This development marks the return of a feature that Microsoft previously tested with DreamScene, a transient option available exclusively for Windows Vista Ultimate. DreamScene was ultimately phased out in later versions of Windows, leaving users to seek alternatives from third-party applications like Wallpaper Engine and Lively Wallpaper for comparable features.

Benefits of Native Support

Introducing native support for video wallpaper could reduce the reliance on these external tools, thereby minimising compatibility and performance concerns while delivering a more cohesive personalisation experience. However, there are still unanswered questions about the potential effects of video wallpapers on system performance and battery longevity, particularly for laptop users.

Current Status and Future Rollout

At present, the feature appears to be concealed in Insider builds within the Dev and Beta Channels. A broader rollout is anticipated to occur following additional testing, although a specific timeline has yet to be established.

As the demand for enhanced personalisation options rises, Microsoft’s move to bring back video wallpapers highlights a long-standing desire among Windows users. If made publicly available, it would enable customisation aficionados to add dynamic visuals to their desktops without the need for additional software or complicated setups.
