YouTube’s ₹850 Crore Investment for India’s Creator Economy
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan recently disclosed a significant commitment of ₹850 crore aimed at bolstering India’s vibrant creator economy over the next two years. This announcement came during the inaugural edition of the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai, where he praised India’s rise as a global centre for digital creativity. He remarked that the platform has already distributed over ₹21,000 crore to Indian creators, artists, and media companies within the past three years.
YouTube’s Role in Cultural Export
Mohan stated, “YouTube’s ability to connect a creator anywhere with audiences everywhere has made it a powerful engine of cultural export, and few nations have leveraged this as effectively as India.” He expressed enthusiasm about India not only being a global leader in film and music but also transitioning into what he terms a “Creator Nation.”
Growth of Indian YouTube Channels
In his address, Mohan highlighted that more than 100 million Indian channels have uploaded content to YouTube in the past year. He noted that 15,000 channels have achieved the impressive milestone of reaching one million subscribers. Furthermore, content from India accumulated over 45 billion hours of watch time from international audiences in 2023, showcasing how Indian creators are increasingly capturing the attention of viewers worldwide.
Investment Focus Areas
According to Mohan, the ₹850 crore investment will be allocated towards enhancing YouTube’s infrastructure and fostering partnerships within India. It will also fund training initiatives designed to assist emerging creators in professionalising their content and scaling their businesses.
