“CEO’s Unusual Late Arrival Penalty: Staff Must Stand Outside the Office”

Indian CEO Sparks Debate by Managing Office Like a Schoolyard

An Indian CEO is at the centre of an online discussion for running his office in a manner reminiscent of a school environment, by locking out latecomers and delivering a public address on productivity. This unusual event was highlighted in a viral Reddit post on r/IndianWorkplace by a user known as ‘shutterspice.’

Schoolyard Management Approach

“In what felt like a time travel moment, our CEO teleported us back to school days today!” the anonymous user reported.

“He shut off all access to the office around noon and required all those who arrived late to stand outside the office doors. After a period, he lectured everyone about the significance of being punctual and productive, stating how ‘I was here till 10 pm last night’ is not a legitimate excuse for arriving late.”

Reminiscing School Days

The user reminisced, saying that the entire experience reminded them of school days. “Honestly, it felt so ridiculous that I was recalling how our school prefects would make us remain outside in the sun if we arrived after 8 am.”

Strong Reactions on Reddit

The post quickly garnered robust reactions on Reddit. One commenter condemned the CEO’s conduct, stating, “This is disrespectful conduct. Rather than this, they could simply mark latecomers as absent for half a day, which could be reflected in their payslips. I am certain that once a pay deduction is on the table, most would not arrive late. This is simply ‘childish’ behaviour.”

Dark Humour Among Users

Another user contributed a darkly humorous comment: “What do you mean you had an accident? Why did only your rickshaw get hit by a car while no other kids arrived safely?” drawing a parallel between the CEO’s response and that of a strict teacher.

They also noted that the CEO’s reputation for public humiliation and arbitrary firings created a climate of fear among employees. “Staff take him seriously because he may insult you publicly and terminate your position. One individual was fired on the last day of his notice period simply for appearing too cheerful. Another was dismissed for adhering to the 9 to 6 routine while his team stayed late.”

Clarification on Workplace Conditions

The original poster provided additional context regarding the workplace conditions. “There are no shifts in this office. Employees are expected to work from 9 to 6. If there are tasks to complete, they are expected to remain late. If there is work, employees must work weekends. If there is work, leaving early is not an option.”

While some users defended the CEO’s actions in cases of extreme tardiness, many concurred that his management style resembled a school punishment more than professional discipline.
