From testing relationships on adventure-filled trips to staying in futuristic homes enhanced by AI, travel will unapologetically celebrate personal identities.

According to Booking.com’s tenth annual Travel Predictions report, key trends will shape how exploration unfolds in 2026. The focus will shift from cooler climates to socially aware and custom travel, indicating a noticeable departure from traditional vacation formats. The influence of technology, including AI and immersive experiences, will play a crucial role in developing journeys that resonate with travellers’ desires.

The research, which collected insights from over 29,000 travellers in 33 countries, indicates that by 2026, vacations will transcend mere trips—they will become deeply personal, experimental experiences shaped by travellers’ true selves.

Fantasy-Inspired Getaways: Stepping into the World of Dreams

In 2026, the boundary between reality and fantasy will blur as travellers engage in immersive experiences inspired by romantic fantasy genres, known as “romantasy.” Nearly 91% of Indian travellers express a desire to visit destinations influenced by their favourite fantasy universes, which feature magical beings and enchanted landscapes.

These holidays will offer more than sightseeing—they will allow travellers to role-play and immerse themselves in narratives. Nine out of ten Indian travellers are receptive to AI recommendations that help discover destinations influenced by beloved books, films, or games.

The vacation rental sector is poised for a significant transformation, merging advanced technology with comfort. By 2026, close to 94% of Indian travellers are eager to experience vacation homes enhanced by robotics, providing services ranging from automated cleaning to tailored meals.

Beyond convenience, many will be excited by the uniqueness of residing in homes that seem pulled from a science fiction tale. Imagine a rental where a robotic chef caters to meals, cleaning bots maintain order, and smart systems support sustainability—all while offering a futuristic getaway.

Relationship Testing: Vacation as a Compatibility Challenge

In 2026, trips will serve as an ultimate compatibility test, with travellers prioritising the evaluation of their personal relationships during these journeys. A remarkable 88% of Indian travellers are open to the idea of travelling with a new partner, friend, or colleague to assess their connection.

Cultural Souvenirs: Elevating Everyday Items into Meaningful Treasures

By 2026, souvenirs will transform beyond the typical fridge magnet, as travellers will seek culturally rich and design-focused keepsakes. Indian travellers will show a growing interest in purchasing kitchenware and pantry items, such as hand-painted spice jars and artisanal olive oil, allowing their kitchens to become mini cultural exhibits.

With 84% of Indian travellers eager for these distinctive souvenirs, such items will carry significant personal stories and strong ties to visited places. For many, these edible, design-driven mementos will trigger unforgettable memories long after their travels conclude.

Reinvented Road Trips: Exploring Shared Journeys

The concept of a road trip will evolve in 2026, as travellers shift from traditional outings to spontaneous and flexible adventures. Almost 97% of Indian travellers are open to the idea of carpooling, using technology to find new companions on their journey. As AI and autonomous vehicles gain traction, road trips will focus more on shared experiences, meeting new individuals, and exploring uncharted territories.
