Anthropic Expands Its Reach in India

Anthropic is embarking on an exciting journey in India this week, bolstering its presence in the nation’s second-largest market following the United States. This initiative includes plans to establish a new office in Bengaluru and investigate a possible collaboration with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, as reported by TechCrunch.

Meetings with Key Industry Leaders

During his visit, CEO Dario Amodei is slated to travel to Mumbai for discussions with Ambani and senior executives at Reliance Industries, the owner of India’s largest telecom operator, Reliance Jio. According to sources, the two companies have been negotiating for several months to extend Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant to a broader Indian audience.

India’s Growing Importance for Anthropic

India, with its extensive base of over a billion internet users, is becoming increasingly vital for Anthropic. The country now provides the second-largest volume of traffic to Claude’s website after the United States. Many Indian AI startups are currently integrating Claude’s models into their offerings for both local and international markets.

Strategic Partnerships in AI

In August, Reliance Industries inaugurated a new division named Reliance Intelligence, aimed at constructing AI infrastructure and enterprise solutions in collaboration with significant technology partners like Google and Meta. Earlier this year, the conglomerate was also looking into a potential partnership with OpenAI, but announcements related to that collaboration were postponed when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman delayed his visit to India.

New Office Opening in Bengaluru

As the week progresses, Amodei is set to arrive in Bengaluru, where Anthropic will officially launch its inaugural India office on Thursday. Accompanying him are Guillaume Princen, head of EMEA, and startups chief Daniel Delaney. Venture capital firms such as Accel and Lightspeed are organising specific sessions with Anthropic executives to assist Indian startups in learning how to effectively integrate Claude into their products.

Growing Popularity of Anthropic’s Claude App

Anthropic’s Claude application has experienced significant growth in India. As per Appfigures, the app’s downloads in the country surged by 48 percent year-on-year in September, reaching approximately 767,000, while consumer spending skyrocketed by 572 percent, totalling $195,000. Although these numbers are modest compared to the United States, where consumer spending on the app reached $2.5 million last month, they showcase a promising trend.

Anthropic’s Competitors in the Indian Market

Anthropic is joining a wave of AI companies aiming to penetrate India’s burgeoning market. AI search startup Perplexity has already partnered with Bharti Airtel to provide its Pro subscription service to over 360 million users, specifically catering to local audiences.

Currently, Anthropic has not made any public statements regarding its expansion plans in India.
