Amazon Web Services Addresses Outage Reports

Amazon Web Services clarified on Thursday that there was no significant outage, asserting that their systems were operating smoothly and advised users to consult the official service status page for reliable updates.

Earlier in the day, Downdetector, an outage-monitoring platform, noted a surge in user complaints from both the United States and India, leading to speculation on social media regarding a possible disruption within AWS. Users reported issues accessing various online services reliant on cloud infrastructure.

AWS Denies Outage Claims

In response to the allegations, AWS refuted any claims of disruption. In a statement on X, the company declared that service availability was normal and attributed the inaccuracies to an unrelated event on the internet. They emphasised that the sole reliable source for service availability is the #AWS Health Dashboard.

Spike in User Complaints

Downdetector recorded the highest number of reports around 7 am IST, with over 4,300 users from the US indicating issues. Meanwhile, complaints within India were fewer, varying between 25 and 30, although disruptions were reported in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

Gaming Platforms Affected

A considerable number of users in the US also experienced difficulties accessing gaming platforms during the peak time of complaints. Titles such as ARC Raiders, Fortnite, Rocket League, and various Epic Games offerings were reported as inaccessible.

Recent Trends in Cloud Disruptions

Disruptions connected to cloud services often lead to confusion, as numerous platforms depend on shared infrastructure, complicating the identification of issues. Instances of this nature have become more frequent in recent months due to the rising reliance on major cloud providers.

In October, a significant AWS outage affected services like Amazon Prime Video, Perplexity AI, and Snapchat, with numerous users reporting problems. Popular platforms like Roblox, McDonald’s, Coinbase, Canva, and Goodreads were also impacted, sparking extensive online discussion.

Earlier this month, Cloudflare faced a brief outage that interrupted access to services like Zerodha, Groww, Canva, and Downdetector. This incident was preceded by another disruption from Cloudflare in November that affected platforms, including ChatGPT and the platform owned by Elon Musk.
