An alarming new study from MIT has highlighted the mental implications of using AI tools such as ChatGPT, suggesting that these technologies may be negatively altering our brain function.

How AI Tools Affect Brain Function

Researchers at MIT’s Media Lab have found that employing generative AI for everyday tasks like essay writing impacts not just the content produced but also the underlying cognitive processes. Disturbingly, participants who depended on ChatGPT displayed the lowest brain activity overall, showing decreased creativity and poor recall of their own writing.

Study Setup and Findings

The study monitored brain activity using EEG sensors and involved 54 participants grouped into three sections: one that utilised ChatGPT, another that used Google Search, and a final control group that relied solely on their own capabilities. The findings were shocking.

Those who wrote independently exhibited superior memory recall, creativity, and engagement levels. Their essays stood out as unique and thought-provoking. Conversely, the work produced by ChatGPT users was found to be almost indistinguishable, dull, and largely a product of cut-and-paste techniques. English educators who assessed these pieces described them as “soulless.”

Cognitive Effects of Using AI

Moreover, brain scans indicated a notable decrease in neural connectivity among ChatGPT users, especially in areas associated with critical thinking and memory. Over time, their engagement further declined; by the end of the writing tasks, many resorted to merely entering the essay prompt into ChatGPT and pasting the output, showing minimal engagement of their own thinking.

Long-term Implications

In subsequent evaluations, participants who initially abstained from AI maintained high levels of brain activity even when later permitted to use ChatGPT. In contrast, those who had started with AI exhibited lower cognitive engagement when working without it, pointing to potential long-term effects on cognitive skills.

While the study is currently in preprint and awaiting peer review, its results contribute to existing worries that excessive reliance on generative AI may undermine essential cognitive abilities, particularly among younger individuals.

Previous Research from MIT

This is not the first warning flag raised by MIT regarding AI. Prior research from the Media Lab discovered a correlation between the more time individuals spent interacting with AI and feelings of loneliness.

The Question of Curiosity

The question remains: Is ChatGPT stifling curiosity? If the findings of this study serve as an indicator, then the answer could very well be affirmative.
