Message Summaries on WhatsApp: AI-Powered Insights

Message Summaries is a new feature on WhatsApp that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to assist users in efficiently catching up on unread messages. This innovative tool, powered by Meta AI, aims to provide swift, private insights into missed conversations within both individual and group chats.

Features of Message Summaries

According to WhatsApp, this optional feature utilises a unique privacy-preserving framework known as “Private Processing”. This ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can view the contents of the messages or the generated summaries. The summaries are structured in a bullet-point format and are labelled as “visible only to you”, highlighting the platform’s commitment to privacy.

The Benefits of Using Message Summaries

Message Summaries are especially beneficial in bustling group chats, where it can be challenging to navigate lengthy strands of unread messages. The AI-generated summaries provide users with a brief overview of the conversation, allowing them to stay informed without needing to individually open or read each message.

How to Enable Message Summaries

This feature is turned off by default and requires users to activate it manually. When switched on, eligible chats will display a small icon indicating that a summary is available. Summaries are created locally on the user’s device, ensuring that they are not transmitted to any external servers, adhering to the Private Processing protocol.

The Technology Behind Private Processing

Private Processing represents Meta’s approach to confidential computing, akin to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, and operates on a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). This framework is built on key principles such as confidential data processing, enforceable protection against tampering, and transparency. If there is an attempt to compromise the system’s security measures, it either shuts down or makes the tampering verifiable to the public. Furthermore, the framework allows for independent auditing to confirm Meta’s privacy assertions and is designed to be non-targetable, stateless, and forward secure.

Customising Your Privacy Settings

Advanced Chat Privacy settings enable users to specify which chats qualify for AI summaries. Importantly, no other participants in the chat will receive notifications if the summary feature is activated.

Availability of Message Summaries

Currently, Message Summaries are being rolled out to users in the United States for English language support. Meta indicates that this feature will be available in additional languages and regions in the near future as part of its ongoing initiatives to integrate AI tools across its platforms.
