AI-powered features are transforming online meetings, as demonstrated by Zoom’s recent announcements at the annual Zoomtopia conference. The company revealed updates that enhance efficiency and flexibility during meetings. Key highlights include realistic AI avatars, an upgraded AI assistant, improved scheduling tools, and enhanced collaboration capabilities across various platforms.

Lifelike AI Avatars Transforming Meeting Dynamics

A standout feature is the introduction of realistic AI-generated avatars, which replicate users’ live video feeds. These avatars allow participants to present a polished image, even when they are not prepared for the camera. Additionally, hosts can utilise these avatars in meeting waiting rooms, sharing personalised messages such as agendas or instructions. This feature is set to be available to users in December.

Enhanced AI Companion 3.0 for Improved Productivity

Zoom has also launched AI Companion 3.0, its enhanced assistant that operates seamlessly across Zoom and competing platforms like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. This assistant can take notes during both virtual and in-person meetings, produce summaries, enrich user-written notes, and extract insights within the Zoom Workplace, Google, and Microsoft ecosystems.

Smart Scheduling Tools for Streamlined Meetings

The assistant features improved scheduling capabilities, introducing an option to reduce unnecessary meetings. It identifies sessions that users might consider skipping and detects scheduling conflicts automatically when multiple appointments overlap. Furthermore, it prepares users for meetings by referencing previous action items and proposing agendas. The new Group Assistant can also answer common team questions, such as identifying action items.

Additional AI Capabilities to Enhance User Experience

New AI functionalities include live voice translation during Zoom Meetings, writing support for emails and documents, and an extensive research tool. Zoom plans to offer custom AI agents via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), while Zoom Virtual Agent (ZVA) will gain the capability to imitate users’ voices for a more tailored conversational experience.

Performance Enhancements for Quality Video Meetings

In addition to AI developments, Zoom has implemented performance improvements such as high-frame-rate video quality at 60fps, increased bit-rate support, and expanded video management tools. These enhancements aid organisations, including educational institutions, in managing and organising recordings, lectures, and training materials. Starting early next year, healthcare providers can also create specialised virtual agents for functions such as patient intake and insurance verification.

No Additional Costs for Subscribers

The majority of these AI Companion features will be accessible from November at no extra cost for paid Zoom Workplace subscribers. Advanced functionalities, such as Automated Quality Management for customer-agent interactions, are scheduled to be released in January 2026.

Vision for the Future of Work

Zoom’s founder and CEO Eric Yuan recently expressed optimism that these innovations could lead to a reduced workweek in the coming years. He suggested that if AI can enhance life quality, there may be less need to maintain a five-day workweek, with companies likely supporting shorter work weeks.
