Instagram Restrictions on Pakistani Celebrities in India
Instagram restrictions have recently affected renowned Pakistani stars such as Fawad Khan, Atif Aslam, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who are no longer accessible in India. Fans attempting to view their accounts are met with a notification stating: “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.”
Impact on Fawad Khan’s Film
The situation further escalates with the suspension of Fawad Khan’s latest film, Abir Gulaal, which also features Vaani Kapoor. Initially set for release on May 9, the film is now facing obstacles and will not be permitted to debut in India, according to sources reported by PTI.
Wider Crackdown on Pakistani Artists
This action is part of a larger enforcement trend. Instagram profiles of other notable Pakistani artists, such as Hania Aamir, Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar, Imran Abbas, and Sajal Aly, have similarly been blocked in India.
Government Actions Against Media
The Indian government has previously taken measures to ban 16 Pakistani YouTube channels for purportedly disseminating provocative material and disinformation targeting India and its military force. Among those channels, Shoaib Akhtar’s popular YouTube platform, which boasts over 3.5 million subscribers, has also been removed.
Altogether, these banned channels garnered a combined audience of nearly 63 million. The list includes prominent media outlets like Dawn News, ARY News, Bol News, Geo News, and Samaa TV. Additionally, channels operated by distinguished journalists—including Irshad Bhatti, Asma Shirazi, Umar Cheema, and Muneeb Farooq—have faced restrictions for viewers in India.
Government’s Criticism of the BBC
In the midst of these digital restrictions, the Indian government has issued a strong letter to the BBC, condemning its portrayal of the Pahalgam incident. The specific grievance involves the use of the term “militants” to describe the attackers instead of “terrorists.” The government has stated it will closely monitor the BBC’s coverage moving forward.
