Canada has long been viewed as an ideal destination for numerous Indians seeking improved living standards, reliable employment, top-notch healthcare, and cleaner urban environments. The allure of a more advanced lifestyle under the maple leaf has compelled many—from young professionals to entire families—to embark on a journey in search of greener pastures. However, what if the reality differs from the dream?

A viral video featuring a Canadian citizen now residing in Bengaluru is challenging this aspirational narrative with a stark warning: “If you are Indian, don’t move to Canada.”

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, Caleb critiques Canada’s immigration framework as exploitative and deceptive. He contends that Indian immigrants are enticed with promises of wealth, only to soon find themselves financially exhausted, emotionally drained, and disillusioned within a few short years.

Caleb illustrates a before-and-after scenario of a typical Indian immigrant participating in Canada’s Express Entry program: a 28-year-old individual with a stable job, savings ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, a car, an apartment, and a satisfying lifestyle. Fast forward three years into life in Canada, and that same person finds themselves renting a home, in debt, juggling several jobs, and cutting down on grocery expenses just to get by.

“Canada drains your lifetime savings and labour to fill its economic gaps,” he claims. “It’s a one-way ticket, and the cost is not only financial; it affects your mental well-being, energy levels, and years you won’t reclaim.”

He compares Canada’s immigration approach to a “real estate and labour pyramid scheme” disguised under positive branding. “People suggest that you ‘Move to a cheaper town.’ However, that’s not the image Canada portrays. It promotes vibrant cities, tech hubs, and urban aspirations,” he observes.

The Popularity of Canada among Indians

Despite Canada being a prime relocation choice for many Indians, numerous individuals realise too late that the situation could have been brighter back home. The video triggered extensive discussions across social media platforms. Some users resonated with Caleb’s sentiments, pointing out that immigration often involves significant sacrifices unless one is exceptionally affluent. They raise concerns about exorbitant healthcare costs, double taxation, and the absence of local support networks.

Conversely, others countered this viewpoint, arguing that India itself presents numerous complications—such as high taxation, inadequate public infrastructure, and bureaucratic challenges—that justify the decision to move to Canada, particularly for younger professionals aiming for long-term benefits.
