Instagram Dislike Button for Comments Testing

Instagram is currently testing a “dislike” button for comments, which could soon allow users around the globe to express their disapproval of certain comments on the platform.

Details of the Dislike Feature

The new dislike button will enable users to send private signals indicating if they consider a comment unhelpful or irrelevant. This feature is in testing and will be available on both Feed posts and Reels.

Insights from Instagram Leadership

Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the initiative on Threads, stating that while users can dislike comments, the count will not be public. Therefore, individuals will remain unaware if their comment has been disliked. Over time, however, disliked comments could be ranked lower in the thread.

What Mosseri Explained

In his explanation, Mosseri noted that some users may have seen the introduction of a new button next to comments. This allows a private method to indicate dissatisfaction with a comment without revealing any dislike metrics. He added that there are plans to potentially use these signals to adjust comment rankings, with the goal of fostering a more positive environment on Instagram.

Meta’s Commitment to User Control

A spokesperson from Meta reflected on the testing, highlighting its goal of empowering users with greater control over their Instagram experience. The spokesperson affirmed that the dislike button is intended to provide a discrete way for users to express their feelings about comments that they do not appreciate. Initially, testing is being conducted with a small user group but may expand in the future to influence comment visibility.

Recent Developments in Instagram’s User Safety Measures

Meta has also rolled out Instagram Teen Accounts in India, incorporating safety measures to create a more secure environment for adolescent users. This includes features for parents to monitor contacts, set screen time limits, and restrict application usage during specified hours for users under 16.

Comparison with Other Platforms

This initiative mirrors Reddit’s established downvote system, which helps highlight the most relevant discussions. Nonetheless, questions remain about whether Instagram’s method will hold the same level of influence over comment visibility as Reddit’s algorithm does.

Current Status of the Testing

As it stands, the dislike feature is undergoing limited testing, and Meta has yet to provide a timeline for broader implementation.
