Google and Qualcomm Partner for Extended OS Support

Google and Qualcomm have joined forces to deliver extended support of up to eight years for operating system (OS) and security updates on Android smartphones using the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. This upgrade support will also extend to selected devices that run on the Snapdragon 8 and Snapdragon 7-series mobile platforms, ensuring users enjoy enhanced performance and increased security over a longer period.

Purpose of the Partnership

Announced by Google on a Monday, the partnership seeks to empower original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to provide extended software support while simultaneously lowering overall upgrade expenses.

Advancements in Technology

Qualcomm stated that this initiative allows Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite, to receive ongoing Android updates for as long as eight years without necessitating significant changes to OEM-specific platform code.

Streamlined Software Maintenance

To enable this extended support, Qualcomm will keep vendor code consistent, thus reducing the requirement for extensive software overhauls. Nonetheless, updates for kernel mode drivers will still be essential to maintain compatibility with upcoming Android versions.

Enhanced Kernel Support

The extended support will encompass two upgrades to the Android Common Kernel (ACK), ensuring that devices can stay aligned with Google’s continuously evolving Android environment.

A Step Towards Sustainability

By providing prolonged updates, Google and Qualcomm hope to foster sustainability and device longevity, ultimately lessening the need for frequent smartphone upgrades and encouraging a more eco-friendly approach to technology consumption.

Eligible Devices for Extended Updates

Smartphones that launch with the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Android 15 will be the inaugural models to take advantage of this prolonged update cycle. Qualcomm has confirmed that five upcoming generations of its ASICs will qualify for this initiative. However, older chipsets will not be part of the extended OS support programme.

Role of OEMs in Implementation

Even though Qualcomm and Google have set the groundwork for prolonged software support, the decision to implement these updates will ultimately rest with individual OEMs. Therefore, while Snapdragon-powered devices are positioned to receive updates for eight years, it will be up to manufacturers to determine whether they will provide comprehensive software support to their users.
