Instagram Considering Standalone Reels App Amid TikTok Uncertainty

Instagram is currently looking into the launch of a separate application dedicated to Reels, its feature for short videos. As reported by The Information, Adam Mosseri, the chief of Instagram, mentioned this possibility in a recent staff meeting, according to insider information.

Meta, the parent organization of Instagram, appears focused on capitalising on the uncertain position of TikTok within the United States. Concerns have been raised by lawmakers regarding TikTok’s ties to its parent company, ByteDance, located in China, prompting some representatives to push for a potential ban. A distinct app for Reels could offer a similar scrolling video experience to users should TikTok face limitations or closure.

This initiative is part of Meta’s broader strategy in the short video landscape. Earlier in January, the firm debuted Edits, a video-editing application designed to rival ByteDance’s CapCut. In the past, Meta has attempted to introduce separate video applications, like Lasso back in 2018, which was eventually abandoned due to insufficient popularity.
