Realme Ultra Concept: A Leap in Smartphone Photography
Realme has introduced a groundbreaking smartphone concept at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, known as the ‘Ultra’ concept. This device showcases an interchangeable-lens system that brings professional mirrorless-camera capabilities into the smartphone realm. Featuring a 1″ customised Sony sensor, the Ultra concept supports detachable lenses to elevate mobile photography to a professional standard.
A Transition to DSLR-Like Photography with Smartphones
For many years, smartphone manufacturers have made comparisons between their devices and digital cameras, but limitations regarding sensor size and lens adaptability have hindered genuine competition. The Realme Ultra concept aims to close this gap by allowing users to attach DSLR and mirrorless-style lenses directly to the smartphone. In contrast to standard smartphones, this innovative concept uses a proprietary lens mount system that permits various focal lengths, akin to those found in professional photography equipment.
During MWC 2025, Realme introduced two interchangeable lenses: a 73mm f/1.4 portrait lens that delivers 3x optical zoom, and a 234mm f/1.5 telephoto lens providing an impressive 10x optical zoom. This system is particularly suited for photography enthusiasts and professionals who seek enhanced image quality, especially in situations where conventional smartphone cameras fall short, such as in long-distance zooming and capturing depth-focused portrait shots.
Manual Adjustments and Stabilisation Challenges
It is important to note that the professional-grade lenses do not feature autofocus support, meaning users must manually adjust the focus. Additionally, stabilisation may not be as effective as that found in standard smartphone cameras, which calls for steady handling during usage. Despite these challenges, the potential for the Ultra concept in the realm of mobile photography is compelling for enthusiasts.
Looking Ahead: Future Possibilities
As of now, Realme has not disclosed any details regarding the commercial availability of the Ultra concept. The company highlighted that this showcase underscores its dedication to tackling challenges within the industry, such as those related to sensor size and limitations of digital zoom. Although the interchangeable-lens system is currently a prototype, it reflects Realme’s aspiration to blend the practicality of smartphones with the performance of professional cameras.
