Introducing the New MacBook Air with M4 Chip

Apple has officially revealed the new MacBook Air featuring the M4 chip, while concurrently discontinuing the previous year’s M3 model. What sets the latest model apart from its predecessor? The most significant alteration is undoubtedly the introduction of the M4 chip, but there are several noteworthy features to explore as well. Let’s delve into the distinctions between these two MacBook models.

Highlights

  • 1 1 – New Sky Blue Colour
  • 2 2 – Enhanced Performance with M4 Chip
  • 3 3 – Increased RAM and Maximum Capacity
  • 4 4 – Advanced 12MP Centre Stage Webcam
  • 5 5 – Pricing Information
    • 5.1 Should You Consider Upgrading to the M4 MacBook Air?

1 – New Sky Blue Colour

This year, Apple did not implement any structural changes or design updates; however, they introduced a fresh colour option with the Sky Blue variant. The company has quietly phased out the Space Grey colour to accommodate this new hue.

2 – Enhanced Performance with M4 Chip

Though the upgrade may seem minor, the M4 chip showcases improved power compared to the M3 chip. While both chips can support up to 10 GPU cores, the M4 includes a 10-core CPU, in contrast to the M3, which is equipped with an 8-core CPU. While specifications indicate a clear enhancement, users may not experience significant performance changes in daily tasks. Nevertheless, the M4 chip provides greater potential for future upgrades, making it a thoughtful choice for long-term use.

3 – Increased RAM and Maximum Capacity

The latest MacBook Air model features 16GB of RAM in the base configuration, which is double the 8GB provided in last year’s edition. This increase is attributed to the M4 chip’s requirements, following the earlier introduction of the MacBook Pros with the M4 chip, which also incorporated 16GB RAM in the base model.

Additionally, this year sees an increase in the maximum RAM capacity. The previous M3 MacBook Air had a maximum available RAM of 24GB, which has now risen to 32GB with the M4 MacBook Air.

4 – Advanced 12MP Centre Stage Webcam

Although MacBook webcams cannot compete with smartphone cameras, they often outperform Windows laptops in this regard. With the new 12MP Centre Stage camera in the M4 MacBook Air, Apple is narrowing the gap further. For perspective, last year’s M3 model only featured a 1080p camera without Centre Stage capability.

5 – Pricing Information

The 13-inch M4 MacBook Air begins at ₹99,900, which represents a ₹15,000 difference compared to the launch price of the 13-inch M3 MacBook Air that started at ₹1,14,900.

Should You Consider Upgrading to the M4 MacBook Air?

For individuals using the M3 MacBook Air, upgrading may not be advisable due to the minimal enhancements and limited performance improvements.

However, those with Intel-based MacBooks or the M1 MacBook Air may find this a suitable moment to consider an upgrade. If a current laptop is functioning adequately and can last for an additional year or two, waiting before upgrading could be wise.

For anyone utilising Windows laptops and contemplating a switch to Mac, this model stands out as one of the best options available right now. Alternatively, it may be beneficial to hold off and explore discount deals on last year’s MacBook Air, as Apple has officially ceased production of that model, leading retailers and resellers with leftover stock to offer appealing prices and discounts.
