Urgent Security Updates Released for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia

Apple has announced immediate security updates for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, addressing a serious vulnerability within WebKit that has been actively exploited through targeted attacks. This issue, identified as CVE-2025-24201, permitted harmful web content to bypass WebKit’s security measures, potentially granting hackers unauthorized access to users’ devices.

This marks Apple’s third significant security update this year, underlining the escalating sophistication of cyber threats aimed at Apple products.

Details of the WebKit Vulnerability

The recent updates include vital fixes related to a WebKit security vulnerability that impacts Safari and various applications that depend on Apple’s browser framework. According to Apple’s security advisories:

  • The vulnerability enabled harmful web content to circumvent security safeguards, allowing attackers to execute unauthorized code.
  • Apple has confirmed that this flaw was exploited by hackers in highly advanced assaults, focusing specifically on users with older iOS versions before iOS 17.2.
  • The problem was initially addressed in iOS 17.2 (released in December 2023) but has re-emerged in subsequent software updates, necessitating this emergency fix.

Apple strongly encourages all users to update their devices without delay to shield against possible attacks.

Recent Emergency Patches from Apple

This update comes in the wake of a series of emergency fixes Apple has implemented in 2025 to combat significant security risks:

  • February 2025: iOS 18.3.1 and iPadOS 18.3.1 corrected a vulnerability that allowed attackers to disable USB Restricted Mode on locked devices, potentially granting unauthorized access to data.
  • January 2025: iOS 18.3 and macOS 15.3 resolved a security flaw that enabled malevolent applications to gain elevated privileges.

Apple has not disclosed specific details about the groups responsible for these breaches, but cybersecurity experts believe that they may be connected to state-sponsored hackers or criminal groups targeting prominent individuals.

How to Update Your Apple Devices

To ensure protection, Apple device users are advised to perform updates as soon as possible:

  • iPhone & iPad: Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 18.3.2 / iPadOS 18.3.2.
  • Mac: Go to System Settings > General > Software Update to apply macOS Sequoia 15.3.2.

These updates are accessible for all compatible Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Vision Pro (which will receive visionOS 2.3.2).

Future Updates and Enhancements

With the anticipated launch of iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 later this year, reports indicate that Apple is preparing a significant redesign alongside enhanced security features. The company is also advancing Apple Intelligence capabilities, integrating AI-driven security measures to detect and counteract sophisticated threats in real time.
