Google Enhances Pixel Studio App with AI-Generated Images
Google has introduced a significant update to its Pixel Studio app, allowing for AI-generated images of individuals for the first time since the app’s inception. This update is a part of Google’s March Pixel Drop, unveiling new AI features, enhancements in sticker creation, and broadened language support specifically for the Pixel 9 series.
Introduction of AI-Generated People in Pixel Studio
Launched in August 2024, the Pixel Studio app is available exclusively on the Pixel 9 series, utilising Google’s proprietary AI models to produce custom images and stickers based on text or image input.
One of the most notable aspects of this update is the revival of AI-generated individuals, a function that Google had previously disabled following criticism regarding racial inaccuracies in its Gemini image generation technology.
Following the public debut of the Imagen 3 AI model in December 2024, Google reinstates this feature, but with specific limitations:
- Images of individuals can only be generated via text prompts.
- The feature does not accept image-based inputs for creating human likenesses.
By cautiously reintroducing this feature, Pixel Studio aligns itself with AI-driven platforms that prioritise responsible image generation practices.
Key Features of Pixel Studio v1.5 Update
In addition to the AI-generated people functionality, the latest v1.5 update of Pixel Studio also includes:
- Support for German and Japanese languages, widening its reach to non-English speaking users.
- An upgraded sticker creation process with a new floating action button (FAB) placed alongside the Create and Image Selection button.
- This allows users to swiftly create stickers using either text prompts or image references.
- A new Light Mode, providing an alternative to the existing Dark Mode and System Default themes.
This update is part of Google’s extensive March Pixel Drop, which additionally features:
- Expanded Gemini Live support to encompass 45 languages.
- A new “Suggestions” feature within Pixel Screenshots to assist users in managing their screenshot collections more efficiently.
Currently, the Pixel Studio app remains a unique offering for the Pixel 9 series, with the potential for Google to make it accessible to upcoming Pixel models as AI technology evolves.
