Microsoft Windows 11 Update Affects Copilot App
Microsoft’s Windows 11 update, released during March’s Patch Tuesday on 11 March, has inadvertently led to the deletion of the Copilot app from various devices. The update (KB5053598) has resulted in the uninstallation and removal of the Copilot app from the taskbar on specific Windows 11 systems.
Resolution in Progress for Copilot App Issue
Microsoft has recognised this problem in a support document, as reported by The Verge, confirming that it is actively seeking a solution to rectify the issue. Meanwhile, users impacted by this glitch can reinstall Copilot from the Microsoft Store and manually add it back to the taskbar. It’s important to note that the issue affects only the standard Copilot app, while the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which requires a subscription, remains unaffected.
Copilot Integration and Its Importance
Initially integrated into Windows 11 in mid-2023, Copilot became a native application earlier this year. This integration was accompanied by the launch of a dedicated Copilot key on Windows keyboards. As the AI landscape continues to evolve globally, Copilot has emerged as a crucial tool for Microsoft.
Upcoming Announcements on Copilot Features
This glitch surfaces just as Microsoft gears up for a special event on 4 April, celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary. Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, is anticipated to unveil new features for Copilot and elaborate on Microsoft’s overarching AI strategy. There are also speculative reports that the company is developing its own AI reasoning models in order to rival OpenAI.
Ongoing Windows 11 Challenges
This incident contributes to a growing catalogue of issues faced by Windows 11, particularly with version 24H2, which has encountered numerous bugs from recent updates. As of now, Microsoft has not confirmed when a definitive fix for the Copilot issue will be rolled out.
