Apple Watch SE Development Challenges
Apple is encountering significant hurdles in the creation of the new Apple Watch SE model, as per insights from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The tech giant is exploring a revised version of the budget-oriented Apple Watch SE, considering a plastic casing instead of the aluminium design found in previous iterations. However, both Apple’s design and operations departments are hitting roadblocks that could jeopardise the model’s future.
Design Discontent with Apple Watch SE
In the latest issue of the Power On newsletter, Gurman indicates that Apple’s design team is reportedly unhappy with the appearance of the plastic-bodied Apple Watch SE. Concurrently, the operations team has discovered that manufacturing a plastic case does not yield significant savings compared to the existing aluminium model, diminishing the rationale for this transition. Without achieving cost reductions, the budget-friendly allure of the Apple Watch SE might not hold up.
Current Apple Watch SE Model
The second-generation Apple Watch SE, launched in 2022, currently stands as Apple’s most economical smartwatch, boasting an aluminium body while still maintaining a premium aesthetic. A plastic-bodied SE could potentially enable Apple to appeal to a wider audience in the budget segment, but Gurman points out that the project now faces “serious jeopardy” and could even be abandoned.
Blood Pressure Monitoring Feature Complications
Apart from the Apple Watch SE, Apple is also reportedly facing challenges in developing a blood pressure monitoring function for its higher-end smartwatches. Gurman mentions that the company continues to experience difficulties in testing this feature, which is aimed for inclusion in the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch Series 11, both anticipated for release in September 2025 alongside the iPhone 17 series. While the exact nature of these complications remains uncertain, they may relate to accuracy, battery longevity, or erroneous readings, pushing back the feature’s launch.
Positive Developments for Apple Smartwatches
Despite these obstacles, there are optimistic advancements regarding Apple’s smartwatch range. The forthcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3 is set to feature improved connectivity options, such as satellite messaging and Reduced Capacity 5G (5G RedCap), enhancing cellular connectivity while the watch operates independently from an iPhone. These enhancements could render the Ultra 3 more attractive to outdoor enthusiasts and professionals seeking dependable communication in isolated locations.
Apple Watch Shipment Decline
Apple’s smartwatch segment is navigating a tough phase, with Bloomberg reporting a decline in Apple Watch shipments in 2024, contributing to the first-ever contraction in the global smartwatch market. With under six months left until the anticipated September launch alongside the iPhone 17, Apple must resolve these development challenges to enhance sales.
