Jio Launches mmWave 5G Services for Enhanced Connectivity

Reliance Jio has initiated the rollout of its advanced mmWave 5G services within the 26 GHz band across 21 states and union territories, illustrating a major advancement in its next-generation telecommunications framework.

The mmWave implementation enhances Jio’s existing 5G coverage in the mid-band 3.3 GHz spectrum, which is currently accessible across all telecom regions in India. While the mid-band 5G effectively meets the primary consumer demands with strong performance and extensive coverage, the mmWave band or 26 GHz spectrum is designated primarily for niche enterprise applications.

Understanding mmWave 5G and Its Significance

Millimetre wave 5G utilizes significantly higher frequencies (specifically 26 GHz) compared to traditional mobile networks. This facilitates ultra-fast data transfer and remarkably low latency; however, its coverage area is limited, and it tends to struggle with penetrating buildings or expansive areas.

Consequently, mmWave 5G necessitates a more dense infrastructure comprising more base stations, compact cells, and meticulous placement, resulting in increased costs and making it more appropriate for specific deployments rather than extensive consumer rollouts.

To put it simply, typical mobile browsing or video streaming does not derive substantial benefits from mmWave. Instead, its advantages are found in enterprise scenarios such as smart manufacturing facilities, industrial automation, high-frequency trading, and remote surgical procedures, all of which require rapid speeds and negligible delay.

Locations Where Jio Has Implemented mmWave 5G

Jio’s mmWave 5G is currently operational in the following states and union territories:

  • North India: Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar
  • West India: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra
  • South India: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana
  • East & Northeast India: West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh

These installations indicate that Jio is focusing on urban, industrial, and technologically advanced areas where enterprise-level applications are more likely to expand.

Impact on Consumers? Minimal for the Time Being

For the typical smartphone user, Jio’s 5G experience will persist on the more flexible 3.3 GHz (C-band) spectrum, which already provides notable enhancements compared to 4G regarding speed and latency.

Although mmWave represents a technological advancement, Jio is not promoting it for widespread consumer use, at least for now. Due to the high infrastructure costs and limited coverage per node, this spectrum is better matched for smart urban areas, technology parks, and corporate campuses.

Nonetheless, Jio’s mmWave introduction is a progressive step in creating a robust network foundation to support India’s expanding digital economy.
