OpenAI’s Image Generation Model Sparks a Studio Ghibli Trend

Recently, social media has been flooded with a wave of animated images, capturing the attention of users everywhere. This surge is attributed to OpenAI’s latest image generation model that transforms portraits into the charming style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli. The trend gained significant popularity thanks to an engineer by the name of Grant Slatton.

On March 25, 2025, following the release of advanced image-generation tools by OpenAI, Slatton shared an AI-generated depiction of his family and dog enjoying a day at the beach, rendered in the beloved aesthetic characteristic of Studio Ghibli.

The post became a sensation almost instantaneously, amassing over 45,000 likes and approaching 49 million views. This newfound popularity inspired numerous individuals to create and share their own Ghibli-style artworks, spreading the trend across various platforms.

Regional Interest in Studio Ghibli Style

In India, the state of Gujarat topped the searches related to Ghibli, with a notable interest also observed in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand.

Server Struggles at OpenAI

The phenomenon gained such impressive momentum that OpenAI faced challenges managing the influx of requests, leading them to impose temporary rate limits and restrict certain image prompts. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, even urged users to moderate their requests, stating that the OpenAI GPUs were “melting” from the overwhelming demand.

It’s super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt.but our GPUs are melting.we are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. hopefully won’t be long!chatgpt free tier will get 3 generations per day soon.

Mixed Reactions to the Trend

Despite the explosive engagement, opinions on this trend have been varied. While many have celebrated the delightful and enchanting style, others have voiced ethical and copyright concerns regarding the replication of Studio Ghibli’s distinct artistic approach.

One prominent critic is Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, who has previously expressed disdain for AI-generated art, calling it “an insult to life itself.”

Slatton’s Impact on the AI Art Debate

Nevertheless, Slatton holds a largely optimistic view regarding his contribution to the trend, referring to the day his post gained popularity as “the single most net-positive day” of his social media journey. His unintentional impact has sparked a broader discussion about the limits of creativity in the digital era, highlighting how a single post can escalate into a worldwide phenomenon.

As conversations surrounding AI-generated art persist, Slatton’s viral experience illustrates the swift and unpredictable nature of trends within the ever-evolving digital sphere.
