Starlink Expands Satellite Internet Service in Bangladesh

Starlink, the satellite internet initiative by Elon Musk, has secured commercial permission to operate in Bangladesh. This significant approval was granted by the country’s telecom regulator on March 28, and it represents an important stride towards implementing satellite internet services across the nation.

Now, Starlink is in the process of obtaining a Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) licence, which is anticipated to arrive soon. When this permit is issued, it will enable the company to officially roll out its services throughout Bangladesh, potentially making it one of the first countries in South Asia to integrate SpaceX’s satellite internet system.

Significance of the Approval

The timing of this launch is particularly significant as Starlink is currently powering the livestream of the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025 in Dhaka, which commenced on April 7. This four-day conference has attracted over 550 investors from more than 50 nations and is regarded as a pivotal opportunity for securing international investment and building partnerships.

Modernising Digital Infrastructure

The granting of the licence to Starlink is viewed as part of a larger initiative by Bangladesh to modernise its digital infrastructure. By facilitating satellite broadband access, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach regions, the government intends to enhance connectivity and bolster essential services like education, healthcare, and governance.

Context of Trade Tensions

This approval arrives amid escalating trade tensions with the United States. Recently, US authorities increased tariffs on Bangladeshi cotton exports from 16% to 37%, creating challenges for a vital sector in the country. With Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus currently leading the interim government, discussions surrounding the tariff increase are expected during President Donald Trump’s ongoing visit to Dhaka.

As the investment summit progresses, the emphasis remains on establishing Bangladesh as a dynamic, technology-driven investment hub, and Starlink’s entry is seen as a pivotal indicator in this direction.
