AI Site Builder Launches by WordPress.com
WordPress.com has unveiled an early access version of its innovative AI Site Builder, an artificial intelligence-driven tool aimed at assisting users in crafting fully functional websites swiftly through an easy-to-use chatbot interface. At this stage, the feature is limited to basic websites and does not accommodate e-commerce platforms or complex integrations.
The introduction of this tool arrives at a pivotal time for Automattic, the parent company of WordPress. Recently, the company experienced a workforce reduction of 16% and is currently navigating a lawsuit from WP Engine. Despite these challenges, Automattic seems dedicated to broadening its AI initiatives.
“Create beautiful, functional websites in minutes,” is the claim made by WordPress.com regarding the new AI builder. This tool empowers users to develop a personalized website simply by interacting with a built-in AI assistant. Users can specify whether they are building a personal blog, a business site, or a portfolio, along with preferences for colours, styles, header types, and more.
Once users provide initial inputs, the builder produces a comprehensive website layout, including AI-generated content, headlines, and images. The chatbot remains functional for further modifications, enabling users to adjust everything from the text to design features and colours upon request.
To utilize this new feature, it’s necessary for users to register for a WordPress.com account. Experimenting with the builder is free; however, publishing a site requires a hosting plan, with costs commencing at £18 per month, offering discounts for longer commitments.
A current constraint is that the AI tool is only compatible with newly created websites and does not operate with pre-existing WordPress installations. Nevertheless, after the AI completes the site construction, it can be migrated to WordPress.com hosting for additional manual customisation or AI-assisted updates.
The launch of the AI builder comes as competition intensifies with other platforms such as Wix and Squarespace, many of which are also integrating AI into their website building tools. Furthermore, the arrival of this feature aligns with the growing interest in no-code solutions as small businesses and creators look to lower development costs.
Although e-commerce functionality is not currently available, WordPress.com suggests that advanced features are on the horizon.
