Krutrim SI Design to Raise $300 Million for AI Initiatives

Krutrim SI Design, the artificial intelligence venture established by Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder of Ola, is in discussions to secure $300 million in a new funding round. This would mark the first funding for the Bengaluru-based startup since it achieved unicorn status in January of the previous year.
Mint was the first news outlet to report on this matter, indicating that Krutrim initially sought to accumulate $500 million but later adjusted the target due to a lack of investor interest. The report further revealed that the funding round is being managed by Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and SBI Capital Markets.
Since its entry into the unicorn club in January 2024, Krutrim has successfully raised around $75 million. Its investors include Z47 (previously known as Matrix), the Sarin Family, and several others. Notably, in December of last year, Aggarwal ensured funding for Krutrim by pledging his Ola Electric shares to secure debt financing through a debenture issuance.
A company spokesperson remarked that Ola refrains from commenting on speculation.
Earlier this year, Aggarwal made a significant announcement regarding the launch of Krutrim AI Labs, which focuses on the development of artificial intelligence tailored specifically for the Indian market. He committed an initial investment of Rs 2,000 crore, with aspirations to escalate that amount to Rs 10,000 crore by the following year.

Building a Comprehensive AI Ecosystem

Krutrim AI Labs is dedicated to creating a comprehensive AI ecosystem within India, with the objective of competing with major industry players such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The company is in the process of developing various AI models, including Krutrim-2, a next-generation language model, Chitrarth 1, which focuses on images and text, Dhwani 1, aimed at speech applications, and Vyakhyarth 1, dedicated to Indian languages.

Establishing India’s Largest AI Supercomputer

In alignment with its ambitious plans, Krutrim is also constructing the largest AI supercomputer in India, utilizing NVIDIA’s GB200 chips to enhance the nation’s AI and cloud infrastructure.
