Artificial Intelligence’s Role in Ending Diseases

Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, has made a bold assertion that artificial intelligence could potentially eliminate all illnesses, perhaps within the next decade.

In a recent conversation with CBS’s 60 Minutes, the British scientist and Nobel Prize laureate highlighted the rapid advancements in AI, saying, “It’s moving incredibly fast.” According to him, the field appears to be on “some kind of exponential curve of improvement.” He noted that this surge is due to the influx of attention, resources, and global expertise pouring into the AI landscape.

AI’s Impact on Healthcare and Drug Discovery

Central to Hassabis’ perspective is the game-changing ability of AI in the healthcare sector, particularly in drug discovery. “On average, it takes about 10 years and billions of dollars to create just one drug,” he mentioned. “We can potentially shorten that from years to perhaps months or even weeks. While this may seem unbelievable today, it mirrors prior assumptions about protein structures.”

DeepMind’s AlphaFold model exemplifies this transformative potential, as it mapped over 200 million protein structures in just a year—a feat Hassabis indicated would typically require “a billion years of PhD time.” Grasping these structures is vital for deciphering disease mechanisms and crafting targeted treatments. “If we understand the function, then we can pinpoint what misfires in disease… And we can formulate drugs and molecules that will interact with the appropriate areas of the protein’s surface.”

The Future of Disease Eradication Through AI

When directly asked if AI could usher in the elimination of all diseases, Hassabis confidently stated, “I believe that this is within reach. Perhaps within the next decade, I don’t see any reason why it cannot happen.”

His remarks quickly captured widespread attention, leading to endorsements from some unexpected figures. Aravind Srinivas, CEO of competing AI organisation Perplexity, expressed his support on X (formerly Twitter). “Demis is a genius, and he should receive all the resources in the world to make this a reality,” he commented. Hassabis responded to this compliment with a simple, “Thanks Aravind!”

Despite his enthusiasm, Hassabis also expressed reservations regarding the swift evolution of AI, voicing concerns about the potential for misuse by malicious entities and the necessity of ensuring that systems remain aligned with human values. “Can we ensure that we maintain control over these systems? That they are in accord with our values, serving societal benefit, and remain within safe boundaries?” he pondered.

Nonetheless, his vision remains steadfast: a future in which AI not only enhances our comprehension of the universe but also addresses the health challenges that have historically troubled humanity.
