Meta is actively deploying artificial intelligence tools aimed at identifying teenagers on Instagram who may have misrepresented their age to evade safety protocols on the platform. The company announced this initiative on Monday, stating that individuals suspected of being underage will automatically be transitioned into limited-access “Teen Accounts,” regardless of the age they have indicated on their profiles.

Initiated last year, Teen Accounts provide a monitored environment specifically crafted for those under the age of 16. This setup includes restrictions on interactions from other users and limits on specific content types. Meta emphasizes that this change is a significant step towards safeguarding younger users and encouraging responsible online behaviour.

How the AI Age Estimation Works

Meta had been employing AI for age estimation prior to this move; however, this announcement demonstrates the company’s commitment to actively utilise these findings to enforce regulations concerning youth safety. The AI assesses various contextual indicators, such as birthday messages or alerts from other users, and cross-references this information with the age provided by the user.

Parents are also encouraged to confirm their child’s birthday as listed on Instagram.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Meta’s decision to extend Teen Accounts to Facebook and Messenger, which occurred just two weeks ago. Currently, the company reports that over 54 million teenagers worldwide are enrolled in Teen Accounts, with an impressive 97% of users aged between 13 to 15 remaining within these secure environments.
