IndiaAI Mission: Pioneering Indigenous AI Development

India is gearing up to ignite its local AI initiatives through the ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is preparing to officially support four domestic startups—Sarvam AI, Soket AI Labs, Gnani.ai, and Gan.ai—focusing on the creation of foundational models for Indian AI, as reported by The Economic Times.

Government Strategy for AI Advancement

The selected companies will take part in the initial phase of the government’s multi-layered approach aimed at creating Large Language Models (LLMs) that cater to the linguistic and digital richness of India.

Innovative Projects from Selected Startups

Among the chosen startups, Soket AI Labs has introduced the EKA Project, an open-source Indic LLM featuring 120 billion parameters trained on 2 trillion tokens. The CEO, Abhishek Upperwal, confirmed the proposal submission to AIM, highlighting the approach as a 12-month project, although the aim is to develop multiple smaller models within the next half year. The exact funding details are not yet disclosed.

Similarly, Sarvam AI is in the process of creating a multimodal AI model with 70 billion parameters that supports both Indian languages and English. Instead of direct financial aid, the company is set to gain GPU compute resources valued at ₹200 crore as part of MeitY’s strategic resource distribution.

Proposals from Other Innovators

Startups Gnani.ai and Gan.ai have put forth proposals for smaller language models. While Gnani.ai opted out of commenting, CEO Ganesh Gopalan confirmed that the focus is on developing speech-to-speech models for Indian languages. Co-founder Ananth Nagaraj is actively engaged with the IndiaAI Mission’s draft policy team, reflecting a deeper commitment to the initiative.

Geopolitical Context and Urgency for AI Development

This initiative coincides with a rising geopolitical urgency, spurred by China’s DeepSeek AI model, which drew worldwide attention earlier this year. In response, India’s government has expedited plans to establish a self-sufficient AI framework.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw previously mentioned that “very soon, we will have our own LLM,” underscoring the nation’s determination to remain competitive with leading global generative AI entities.

Future Prospects and Infrastructure Development

By February 15, MeitY had reviewed 67 applications, followed by another 120 in March, for its ₹1,500 crore incentive scheme targeting foundational model creation. Final announcements regarding the selections are anticipated shortly.

Alongside, MeitY is developing a centralised computing infrastructure, collaborating with 10 GPU-as-a-service providers, including Jio, Yotta, CtrlS, Tata Communications, and NxtGen. This cloud infrastructure is designed to offer GPU access at rates below $1 per hour, positioning it as one of the most cost-effective computing platforms globally.
