Electronic Arts Layoffs Impacting Titanfall Universe and Respawn Entertainment
Electronic Arts is implementing layoffs that will affect between 300 and 400 employees, which includes approximately 100 positions at Respawn Entertainment. The company has also decided to cancel a game set within the Titanfall universe that was under development.
Details of the Cancelled Titanfall Game
The cancelled title, referred to by the codename “R7,” was expected to be an extraction shooter and was still in the early stages of development. In addition to R7, Respawn confirmed earlier this year that it had discontinued another early-stage project as well.
Statements from Electronic Arts
Justin Higgs, an EA spokesperson, explained, “As part of our ongoing emphasis on long-term strategic objectives, we’ve made selective adjustments within our organisation that allow for better team alignment and resource allocation to promote future growth.”
Respawn Entertainment’s Response
In a post on X, Respawn mentioned that it has made “targeted team adjustments” within its Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi teams. They added, “These decisions aren’t easy, and we are deeply appreciative of every team member impacted by these changes.”
Commitment to Ongoing Projects
Despite the recent restructuring, Respawn has reaffirmed its dedication to both franchises. The studio is in the process of developing new seasons for Apex Legends and intends to “raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay” in the upcoming Star Wars Jedi game.
Challenges for Electronic Arts
The layoffs come at a pivotal moment for Electronic Arts. Earlier in January, the company revised its annual bookings forecast downwards, attributing it to lower in-game spending on its football title “FC 25” and lacklustre performance from the new Dragon Age game amid a challenging economic environment.
