Misinformation About ATMs and Cyber Attacks
Misinformation is currently widespread on social media, particularly on platforms such as WhatsApp. A new claim is making rounds stating that due to a ransomware attack originating from Pakistan, all ATMs in the nation will be offline for 2-3 days. The message further mentions something referred to as “Dance of the Hillary,” suggesting that opening a video linked to it could potentially format mobile devices due to a virus.
This claim is false and has previously been debunked by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Individuals receiving such messages are encouraged to disregard them and avoid propagating inaccurate information.
Background on the Misinformation
This type of message has circulated previously and has again been proven to be untrue. There will be no disruption in ATM services across the country, and online transactions remain secure.
Cybersecurity Awareness in Financial Institutions
Given the recent strain between India and Pakistan, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to evaluate the cybersecurity readiness of the financial institutions in India. Banks have been instructed to maintain a heightened state of alert and enhance their digital security protocols as tensions rise.
Upcoming Meetings
A meeting with banking representatives is scheduled for the evening of Friday, 9 May, in response to increasing concerns regarding the robustness of critical banking infrastructure.
In the interim, it is advised to exercise caution and refrain from sharing any unverified information.
