Cyberattack on Pakistan Amid Rising Tensions with India

Cyberattack on Pakistan is becoming a notable issue as tensions with India escalate. Government social media accounts are being targeted, leading to various incidents of hacking. Several official accounts of the Pakistani government on X (formerly Twitter) have posted alarming updates regarding the escalating conflict and military impacts, only to later remove those posts, citing hacking as the reason.

Impact on the Pakistan Stock Exchange

One significant instance involved the Pakistan Stock Exchange website, which was inaccessible for a considerable duration early in the day. A notice on the website declared, “PSX website is under maintenance until further notice.”

Government’s Appeals and Deleted Tweets

Earlier today, the Economic Affairs Division of the Government of Pakistan made a post on X stating, “Govt of Pakistan appeals to International Partners for more loans after heavy losses inflicted by enemy. Amid escalating war and stocks crash, we urge international partners to help de-escalate. Nation urged to remain steadfast.”

However, this tweet was swiftly removed, and officials indicated that the account had been compromised. Following this, the account appeared to be deleted entirely from X, showing a message that the page does not exist when searched.

Karachi Port Trust’s Hacking Incident

A similar trend was observed with the official Twitter account of the Karachi Port Trust. The account reported that significant damage had been inflicted on the port by the Indian Navy. The post read, “Karachi Port has sustained heavy damage following a strike by India, resulting in unacceptable loss of property. Emergency response efforts are underway. Updates on restoration will be provided regularly. We stand resilient.”

This posting occurred shortly after the account claimed that reports of a naval attack were “completely false and baseless.” It had asserted that shipping activities at the port were proceeding as normal.

The controversial post was deleted, and a new message was released stating that Karachi Port is secure and confirming the account was hacked.

India’s Cybersecurity Measures

In India, efforts are being made to fortify the country’s financial infrastructure against potential cyberattacks. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman plans to evaluate the cybersecurity readiness of India’s financial institutions shortly. Banks across the nation have been advised to remain vigilant and enhance their digital security protocols in light of the increasing conflict with Pakistan.

A meeting with financial institutions is scheduled for the evening of Friday, 9 May, addressing heightened concerns surrounding the protection of critical banking infrastructure.
